Data Engineer
Job Description
The Data Engineer will manage Oracle and PostgreSQL database systems and design robust data integration and ETL solutions to support cancer research. This onsite role is based in Princeton, NJ, with a compensation range of USD 130,000 to 160,000 per year.
Responsibilities
- Install, configure, and sustain database instances across development, testing, production, on-premises, and AWS cloud environments.
- Execute database upgrades, apply patches, and manage migrations.
- Monitor database performance, proactively address bottlenecks, implement security controls, and design backup and recovery strategies; troubleshoot issues for application development teams.
- Automate routine DBA tasks using scripting languages such as SQL, PL/SQL, and shell scripting, while staying current with database technologies and best practices.
- Contribute to the planning and execution of migrations from on-premises environments to AWS RDS for Oracle.
- Design and implement ETL processes to extract data from various sources, transform it per business requirements, and load it into target systems like data warehouses or data lakes.
- Develop and maintain data pipelines using ETL tools such as Talend, SQL scripts, and Power Automate.
- Optimize ETL processes for performance and scalability.
- Perform data profiling and data quality analyses to ensure accuracy and consistency of data.
- Collaborate with business analysts and data scientists to capture data requirements and translate them into technical specifications.
- Implement data governance and data quality rules within ETL workflows.
- Create and maintain system architecture diagrams, data flow and integration diagrams, technical design documents, source-to-target mappings, and data lineage artifacts to support data platforms and integrations.
- Ensure solutions follow SDLC, validation, change management, security, data governance, and quality standards, including audit-ready documentation and traceability.
- Identify opportunities to improve data quality, reduce technical debt, streamline integrations, and simplify enterprise data architecture.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field.
- AWS certification preferred.
- 7 to 10 years of prior experience as an Oracle DBA or Data Engineer with ETL tools such as Talend, SQL scripts, or Power Automate.
- Strong understanding of Oracle database architecture, administration, and performance tuning, combined with expertise in ETL methodologies and tools.
- Proficient in SQL and PL/SQL.
- Experience with scripting languages, including shell scripting and Python.
- Experience with cloud database technologies, preferably AWS RDS.
- Experience with cloud migration, application modernization, and legacy system decommissioning initiatives.
- Solid knowledge of data warehousing concepts and methodologies.
- Prior experience in a CRO, pharmaceutical, or highly regulated environment is preferred.
