Job Description

City and County of San Francisco’s DataSF team is hiring a hands-on Data Engineer to bring department data onto the Unified Data Platform.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain production data pipelines that move department data onto the platform, including tests and documentation for ongoing maintainability by others.
  • Develop data models in dbt on Snowflake to transform raw department data into clean, well-documented tables used by City analysts.
  • Create financial and budget data products using the City’s financial and workforce systems to support migration off legacy reporting and deliver accurate budgeting and planning numbers.
  • Support platform cost and usage reporting so the team and partner departments can understand platform expenses and resource usage.
  • Assist with transitioning publishing workflows from legacy systems onto the Unified Data Platform, including public-facing open data feeds.
  • Investigate and resolve data quality issues by tracing errors to source, fixing problems, and adding tests to prevent recurrence.
  • Support department onboarding by helping analysts understand and use the models you build.
  • Participate in code review and grow into reviewing others’ code as experience increases.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in computer science, computer engineering, information systems, or a closely related field from an accredited college or university, or equivalent in total course credits/units (at least 60 semester or 90 quarter credits/units), with a minimum of 20 semester or 30 quarter credits/units in one of the listed fields.
  • 1 year of experience analyzing, installing, configuring, enhancing, and/or maintaining components of a system or platform.
  • Additional 1 year of experience as described above may substitute for the required degree.
  • Completion of the 1010 Information Systems Trainee Program may substitute for the required degree.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience building real data-moving or data-transforming projects (job, internship, or personal), including ability to explain design and challenges encountered.
  • Ability to write SQL and familiarity with at least one programming language, ideally Python.
  • Strong attention to numerical accuracy and instinct for recognizing when data doesn’t look right.
  • Plus: experience with financial, budget, or ERP data and familiarity with dbt, Snowflake, or Terraform.
  • Strong potential and intuition working with data, with ability to learn new tools and the platform stack on the job.
