Engineer - Gas Engineering

Avangrid is seeking an Engineer - Gas Engineering for an onsite role in Orange, CT supporting engineering activities and projects across the natural gas pipeline environment. The position focuses on planning and execution of engineering studies, pipeline safety compliance support, and assistance with incident investigations, with an emergency preparedness component in a DOT safety-sensitive role.

Salary: USD 96,400 - 120,500 per year. Experience: 2 years minimum. Education: Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical, Civil, or equivalent Engineering or Engineering Technology.

What you’ll do

• Support projects and field engineering activities with average to complex features.
• Perform assigned engineering studies, propose solutions to engineering problems, and develop models to analyze data for continuous improvement initiatives.
• Interface with outside departments, vendors, suppliers, and reliability entities.
• Assist in developing and delivering engineering project presentations to management and external parties such as contractors and customers.
• Plan and manage individual workflow to meet budgets and schedules.
• Provide subject matter expertise to support training on regulatory compliance topics for internal and external stakeholders.
• Maintain standards, procedures, and processes that support compliance with pipeline safety regulations.
• Support internal stakeholders with deliverables needed for state and federal regulatory audits and inspections, as necessary.
• Evaluate and provide technical guidance for assigned pipeline compliance requests.
• Contribute to special projects to ensure pipeline safety initiatives align with the Pipeline Safety Management System.
• Support continuous improvement of systems and documentation practices with consistency and standardization.
• Help resolve non-compliance issues using proven methodologies with a preventative focus to mitigate recurrence.
• Research, compile, and/or prepare studies and responses to proposed regulation changes, recommendations, policies, procedures, and correspondence.
• Review documents, prepare checklists and audit agendas, conduct pre- and post-audits, and prepare final reports.
• Support incident investigations and root cause analyses.
• Communicate clearly in writing and verbally, including creating accurate and timely reports and delivering presentations.
• Make systematic decisions under pressure, build consensus among stakeholders, and consider decision impacts.

What you bring

• Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical, Civil, or equivalent Engineering or Engineering Technology and 2-5+ years of job-relevant experience.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (primarily Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Project, Access) plus Visio and SharePoint.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with time management and prioritization.
• Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
• Understanding of Federal and State Code requirements applicable to the Operation and Maintenance of natural gas transmission and distribution systems.
• Understanding of Integrity Management requirements for natural gas transmission and distribution systems, including Inline Inspection and External Corrosion, Internal Corrosion, Stress Corrosion, and Confirmatory Direct Assessment.
• Pipeline analysis experience to determine operability and/or mitigate risk.
• Experience researching, identifying, evaluating, and prioritizing problems or situations and coordinating appropriate actions.
• Ability to manage projects, develop efforts, and collaborate effectively.
• Ability to document and interpret engineering information and maintain records in line with company retention requirements.
• Experience with company-specific O&M Procedures, Construction Standards, Material Specifications, pipeline analysis and repair, Integrity Management Program, and related engineering documentation processes.
• Knowledge of Local, State, and Federal regulatory standards applicable to natural gas transmission and distribution.
• Ability to support an emergency preparedness role that may require work in temporary operating locations depending on operational conditions.
• DOT safety-sensitive position requiring participation in a drug testing program.

Helpful industry knowledge

• Understanding of ANSI, ASME, API and other industry standards relevant to the natural gas industry.
• Understanding of 49 CFR Part 191 and 192 or experience in pipeline safety compliance areas.
• Understanding of MA 220 CMR Parts 100.00 – 114.00 or experience with Massachusetts pipeline safety compliance (Berkshire Gas Corporation employment).
• Understanding of Maine Public Utilities Commission Chapter 420 or experience with Maine pipeline safety compliance (Maine Natural Gas employment).
• Understanding of 16 NYCRR Part 229, 255, 261 and Part 753 or experience with New York pipeline safety compliance (New York State Electric and Gas/Rochester Gas and Electric employment).
