Engineer II - Materials
Job Description
General Dynamics Electric Boat is seeking an Engineer II for Materials to support Department 342 from an onsite location in Groton, CT. In this role, you will perform metallic materials engineering that connects design, additive manufacturing, materials evaluation, and technical liaison across EB departments, shipyards, vendors, and the customer.
This position focuses on translating materials engineering inputs into practical outcomes across the full lifecycle of engineering work, including specification interpretation, non-conformance adjudication, and engineering investigations tied to material performance and failure analysis.
Responsibilities
- Provide Materials Engineering input into Design and Engineering Additive Manufacturing projects, supporting work from initial concepts through final design, including material selections, materials evaluations, and technical liaison with internal departments and the customer
- Support specification selection and interpretation
- Provide technical assistance and direction to Operations related to the processing of materials and fabrication of components
- Adjudicate material non-conformances such as defects and improper heat treatment
- Contribute metallurgical expertise to multi-disciplinary teams
- Perform material failure analyses and related engineering investigations
- Interpret case reports and studies in a practical and meaningful way
- Maintain liaison with Government and private laboratories and industry partners related to materials technology
- Provide overall support for all Engineering departments
Requirements
- BS in Materials Engineering with a concentration or interest in metallurgy, or BS in Metallurgical Engineering
- 2-5 years of post graduate engineering experience
- MS in Materials Engineering with a concentration or interest in metallurgy, or MS in Metallurgical Engineering
- Experience in an industrial environment, shipbuilding, or other heavy fabrication
- Experience with Additive Manufacturing processes, including direct-energy deposition and laser powder bed fusion
- Familiarity with additive manufacturing processes and metal production practices including mill production of metal products, casting production, heat treatment, mechanical properties, mechanical property testing, and metallographic techniques
- Knowledge of material specifications, standards, and technical publications, including Military, Federal, ASTM, and ASM is desirable
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in writing and verbally, including preparing technical reports and correspondences with correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation
- Comfort working in a fast-paced team setting, consulting with coworkers, and interacting with both hourly technicians and upper management
- Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint proficiency is required
