Engineer Materials
Job Description
The Virginia Department of Transportation seeks an Engineer Materials in Sandston, VA to oversee materials related engineering activities and support project delivery.
Responsibilities
- Oversee and close out engineering tasks for construction and maintenance projects.
- Develop and implement Materials Division engineering programs aligned with project design needs.
- Assess and integrate design recommendations into the appropriate Materials Division program areas.
- Provide technical support to field construction staff to resolve issues arising during construction.
- Deliver construction engineering support to VDOT, local governments, state agencies, and consultants.
- Offer technical guidance and training on assigned engineering program areas.
- Prepare analyses, reports, and recommendations based on engineering determinations.
- Provide engineering support and consultation for the designated program area.
- Manage assigned projects to ensure timely and accurate completion.
- Communicate with VDOT staff, local government staff, consultants, the public, and FHWA on transportation projects and programs.
- Analyze engineering data and produce clear, concise reports and recommendations.
- Maintain effective communication among VDOT, contractors, agencies and the public; investigate and resolve complaints.
- Conduct special investigations for Materials Division program areas; provide written remedial recommendations; evaluate repair strategies and economic impact.
- Apply established VDOT policies and procedures to deliver engineering projects in compliance with laws and regulations.
- Execute activities to meet engineering project needs; provide accurate oral and written reports to design units.
- Plan, schedule and coordinate engineering program activities to meet scope, timeline and deliverables.
- Assist in project management, including scope, schedule, budget, deliverables, change management, quality, and status reports; manage multiple concurrent tasks with status updates.
- Provide engineering support across sections to ensure on time and on budget delivery; review consultant reports for completeness and accuracy; review plan and contract documents with comments; serve as a subject matter expert to field staff.
- Lead special program initiatives and represent VDOT on committees and work groups.
- Demonstrate customer service and teamwork aligned with VDOT values; ensure clear exchange of information orally and in writing.

- Willingness to work in environments with dust, vapors, heat, moisture and other challenging conditions.
- Knowledge of engineering specifications and standards.
- Knowledge of VDOT, state, and federal transportation policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of construction practices, engineering principles and construction materials.
- Knowledge of project management procedures and principles.
- Strong customer service skills for internal and external stakeholders.
- Proficiency with computers, MS Office, project management tools and engineering software.
- Ability to communicate and provide technical guidance and instruction to others.
- Ability to read and understand plan and contract documents.
- Experience applying materials principles to highway design, construction, and maintenance.
- Experience with engineering design principles and practices.
- Proficiency with various computer and software applications.
- Valid driver's license.
- A combination of training, experience or education in Civil Engineering or related field is preferred.
- Professional Engineering License (PE).
- Professional engineering experience.
