Engineer Sr/Spec/Prin - Systems- Embedded Engineer

Work on the COLUMBIA Program as part of the D379 Project Engineering Team, where embedded Systems Engineering helps keep ship construction planning and execution moving. This Groton, CT onsite role places engineers alongside operations supervision to identify and overcome hurdles in planned and unplanned work, supporting trades and helping reduce production disruption across key ship spaces.

What you’ll do

• Build and maintain a strong working relationship with the assigned trade group and trade supervision (General Foreman).
• Learn and navigate design disclosures, technical work documents, work orders, and shipyard processes to resolve problems that prevent efficient ship construction.
• Identify issues with work packages and initiate timely corrective actions so operations can execute deckplate work.
• Communicate operations priorities with the assigned Module Lead and other required organizations.
• Minimize production problems by ensuring operations understands critical aspects of upcoming work.
• Support the General Foreman’s time planning and preparation for upcoming trades and trade supervision through deeper understanding of design disclosures, technical work documents, work orders, and shipyard processes.
• Enable better planning outcomes by addressing work package problems early and coordinating required priorities across organizations.
• Ensure liabilities are initiated with complete and accurate information, and reduce liability generation by preventing deckplate problems.
• Leverage shipyard work practices to adjudicate construction problems versus unnecessary requests for formal engineering direction.
• Support trades during their work day, which may include extended hours and occasional weekend support.

Where you’ll be embedded

• Co-locate with operations while identifying and overcoming hurdles in upcoming planned or unplanned work.
• Support ship construction activities including work in the Reactor Compartment, Engine Room, and ship exterior.
• Work with trades including Pipe Fitters, Steel Trades, Electricians, Pipe Welders, Sheet Metal Fabricators, and Machinists.

Required qualifications

• Bachelor of Science or higher in mechanical, civil, chemical, aerospace, marine, or electrical engineering.
• 5-15 years of post graduate engineering experience.
• Understanding of the shipyard’s planning, operations, quality, and test organizations and their roles and responsibilities.
• Understanding of EB business management tools, including Teamcenter, Electronic Desktop, Artemis, Power BI, and others.
• Experience with ship design.
• Experience working in trades or trades supervision.
• Working knowledge of project management principles as they relate to construction.
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with minimal supervision.
• Demonstrated problem solving ability with diverse problem types.
• Ability to withstand change in a fast paced environment.
• Demonstrated understanding of process improvement principles.
