Experienced Protection and Control Engineer
Job Description
Experienced Protection and Control Engineer at Ampirical, based in Covington, LA with remote work options and in-office preference in Duluth, GA, focusing on protection and control design for transmission and distribution substations, with client and vendor interface and mentorship responsibilities.
Responsibilities
- Assess and select protection and control schemes appropriate for transmission and distribution substations.
- Choose protection devices, verify correct sizing, and manage material procurement.
- Prepare scopes of work, estimates, and drawing packages including wiring diagrams, schematics, protection panels, and one-line and three-line diagrams.
- Perform load calculations for panels, battery systems, voltage drop, and other substation components.
- Ensure adherence to client standards and relevant relay protection regulations and industry guidelines.
- Provide field support and conduct pre-inspections for turnkey substation projects involving protection panels, breakers, transformers, control houses, and related equipment.
- Interface with clients and vendors to ensure project alignment and technical accuracy throughout the lifecycle.
- Mentor junior engineers and offer technical guidance to project teams.
- Collaborate with internal groups to revise and maintain design and construction scope processes.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET‑accredited university.
- FE exam required for Engineer III and Engineer IV, or plus two years of experience in lieu of the FE.
- Minimum 3 years of protection and control design experience in the utilities or energy sector.
- More than 5 years of experience with demonstrated technical depth and project leadership.
- Experience with ETAP software.
- Experience with WinIGS software.
- Experience with IEEE 80 and IEEE 998 standards.
- Knowledge of SCADA, automation, relay settings, RTU configuration, and core protection and control engineering concepts.
- Experience in the electric utility industry.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills.
