Job Description

Geotechnical Engineer position based onsite in Grand Junction, Colorado, focusing on geotechnical analyses, field investigations, reporting, and construction support, with project management responsibilities and client coordination, including collaboration with an in-house geotechnical laboratory.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct geotechnical engineering analyses and calculations for civil and structural design projects.
  • Support project management, including scheduling, budgeting, and coordination.
  • Prepare proposals, scopes of work, fee estimates, and project correspondence.
  • Perform geotechnical modeling and analysis, including slope stability, foundation design, settlement, and earth-retention considerations.
  • Plan and execute geotechnical field investigations, including drilling observation, test pit logging, sampling, and instrumentation monitoring.
  • Coordinate with and provide technical support to the in-house geotechnical and construction materials testing laboratory.
  • Coordinate with clients, contractors, government agencies, and other design professionals.
  • Conduct site visits during construction to observe conditions, monitor quality, and evaluate progress.
  • Prepare, review, and edit geotechnical reports, construction specifications, and technical recommendations.
  • Exercise sound engineering judgment and professional discretion in all aspects of the work.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, geological engineering, geotechnical engineering, or a closely related ABET-accredited program.
  • 3–10 years of experience in geotechnical engineering or a closely related field.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or Professional Engineer licensure preferred; Colorado PE licensure strongly preferred for more senior candidates.
  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to travel to project sites, including mountainous terrain and seasonal driving conditions.
  • Ability to occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds.

Work Environment

This position combines office work with field assignments. Field activities may include observing drilling or excavation, collecting soil and rock samples, visiting active construction sites, and coordinating with the in-house materials testing laboratory. Projects are primarily located throughout Western Colorado and surrounding areas, typically within a few hours’ drive, with occasional longer travel or overnight stays.

Salary: USD 85,000 - 120,000 per year
