Job Description

The Opportunity

The Senior Geotechnical Engineer drives business growth by pursuing new opportunities, cross selling SME services, and preparing project plans and reports. The role also includes mentoring and guiding team members to ensure the successful completion of assigned responsibilities.

Responsibilities

Identify and secure clients and project opportunities, working independently or in support of local, regional, and corporate business development activities.
Develop compelling proposals and negotiate fees and contract terms for professional services.
Engage with professional and business organizations and other networking activities to strengthen relationships with current and prospective clients.
Learn about other SME services to promote and expand geotechnical and related SME offerings to new and existing clients.
Prepare design calculations, drawings, and specifications for earth retention, grouting, deep foundation, and reinforced earth systems projects.
Perform analytical modeling to support geotechnical evaluations.
Prepare geotechnical evaluation reports.
Mentor and lead project team members to ensure the successful completion of assigned responsibilities.

Requirements

Proficiency with computer operating systems and the MS Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint).
Strong written and verbal communication skills to clearly convey technical information to clients, teammates, and supervisors.
Excellent organizational abilities with the capacity to prioritize, manage multiple workloads, and maintain meticulous records, including field observations, safety concerns, and problem resolutions.
Strong interpersonal skills to build rapport with clients and team members, fostering positive working relationships and delivering attentive, client-focused service.
Ability to adapt to change and respond productively to frequent interruptions and shifting conditions.
Fundamental construction competencies, including locating features from surveys, road maps, aerial photos, topographic maps, and geologic maps; understanding stakes set by others and utility color markings.
A general aptitude for identifying and resolving complex technical problems in the field using critical thinking and logical reasoning.
Demonstrates ethical conduct, maintains confidentiality and safety, and adheres to safety protocols and guidelines to foster a safe working environment for all.
Ability to meet physical demands, including repetitive lifting up to 50 pounds, walking on uneven ground, carrying equipment, working in various weather conditions, and traveling to different locations.

Role overview

We are seeking a seasoned geotechnical engineering leader to provide technical support, project oversight, and strategic guidance. The position blends advanced technical expertise with project leadership and client engagement. The successful candidate will collaborate with company leadership and senior technical staff to guide geotechnical investigations that align with client objectives and project priorities. This role offers the chance to establish and grow SPC’s geotechnical services as a new department within a rapidly expanding consulting firm. The Senior Geotechnical Engineer will influence technical standards, support project delivery, and help build the team as the service line expands. This opportunity suits a self-motivated professional who contributes strategic insight and makes a lasting impact while developing a new area of the business. Essential duties and responsibilities

Lead and supervise subsurface investigations, including defining scope, staffing, schedules, and technical approach
Direct field operations such as boring programs, site investigations, sampling, and field testing
Review and interpret geotechnical data, delivering senior-level evaluations and design guidance for foundations, earthwork, and site development
Prepare, review, and approve geotechnical reports
Serve as the primary technical contact for clients, contractors, regulators, and the SPC team
Oversee project documentation to ensure accuracy and completeness
Lead project planning activities including scheduling, task coordination, and budget oversight
Support and contribute to proposal development, scope definition, and technical strategy
Ensure compliance with safety programs, quality standards, and applicable regulatory requirements
Provide strategic input on project delivery, operational improvements, and technical recommendations
Apply advanced geotechnical engineering methods to enhance infrastructure project performance and outcomes
Mentor and guide entry-level engineers and field staff
Perform additional leadership and technical responsibilities as needed to support team success and business objectives

Position requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering; Master’s degree preferred
15+ years of geotechnical engineering experience
Professional Engineer (PE) license
10 years in a project management role
Strong knowledge of soil mechanics, foundation engineering, site characterization, and geotechnical laboratory testing
Positive client relation skills
Proficient computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook)
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Solid reasoning and problem-solving abilities
Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy

Overview

Earth Wall Products invites a skilled Civil and Geotechnical Engineer to join our growing team in Smyrna, Georgia. We design and supply retaining wall systems and construction materials used in residential, commercial, industrial, DOT and rail projects. This in-office role is based at our Smyrna location and reports to senior engineering staff. You will prepare retaining wall designs for complex projects across the United States, including bridge abutments, interstates, heavy and light rail, and commercial developments. This is not an entry level position; the role includes reviewing the work of other engineers on the team.

Responsibilities

Full-time, in-office engineer located in Smyrna, GA
Develop detailed retaining wall designs, sections, and quantity takeoffs
Produce retaining wall drawings using AutoCAD
Review the work of other members of the engineering team
Offer recommendations or present alternative solutions to problems
Contribute to team efforts by assisting with related tasks as needed

Qualifications

Required

Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering or related technical field from an ABET-accredited program
Coursework and/or experience in geotechnical engineering is required
Minimum of four years of experience plus a PE license and/or MS in Civil/Geotechnical Engineering
Proficient with AutoCAD and Microsoft Excel
Solid understanding of civil engineering principles, practices, and tools
Ability to identify and solve complex problems
Excellent attention to detail and accuracy
Strong organizational skills to manage multiple tasks from concept through delivery

Preferred

Experience with retaining wall design is highly preferred
Knowledge of grading and roadway plans, slope stability, foundation design, and reinforced concrete is preferred
