Geotechnical Research Engineer - Level 2
Job Description
Responsibilities
- Oversee the creation of detailed research workplans addressing bridge-related soil–structure interaction and targeting high-priority challenges faced by state DOT engineers.
- Perform standard and advanced geotechnical laboratory tests, including triaxial, direct shear, resilient modulus, permeability, and erosion testing, in line with ASTM and AASHTO standards.
- Prepare, fabricate, and test soil and aggregate specimens, covering both large‑scale and specialty testing scenarios.
- Install instrumentation, assemble data acquisition systems, and assist with field monitoring activities.
- Apply machine learning, AI tools, and advanced data analytics to interpret complex laboratory and field datasets.
- Analyze laboratory and field data and produce plots, summaries, and interpretations.
- Conduct literature reviews, synthesize findings, and contribute to the development of research workplans.
- Carry out advanced numerical modeling, including finite element and constitutive modeling, with a focus on soil–structure interaction.
- Document test procedures with detailed notes, photographs, and schematics.
- Develop and prepare FHWA research reports, TechBriefs, and peer‑reviewed publications.
- Support the preparation of presentations, technical summaries, and technology‑transfer materials.
- Assist with equipment setup, maintenance, calibration, safety compliance, and procurement of specialty instrumentation and supplies.
- Participate in weekly progress meetings and maintain organized project files.
Requirements
- Master’s degree in civil engineering with a core concentration in Geotechnical Engineering.
- Demonstrated experience in bridge‑related geotechnical engineering, soil–structure interaction, and advanced material or aggregate characterization.
- Hands‑on experience planning, conducting, analyzing, and reporting on laboratory‑scale or large‑scale geotechnical research beyond degree requirements.
- Track record of technical publications and presentations.
- Strong computational and data analysis skills, with proficiency in MATLAB, Python, R, or similar programming languages used in engineering applications.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to produce publication‑ready technical content.

Pay
Salary: USD 85,000 to 100,000 per year.
Work Location
Onsite operations in McLean, Virginia.
