Junior Mechanical Engineer
Job Description
Attolas Technologies Inc. is seeking a Junior Mechanical Engineer to support the design, fabrication, testing, and commissioning of first-of-a-kind process equipment. The position is located in Raleigh, NC with hybrid flexibility, including in-person hardware build and commissioning activities with travel as needed.
Role Overview
This junior mechanical engineering role focuses on developing process equipment that combines mechanical systems with vacuum and high-temperature assemblies, chemical-handling capabilities, and integrated electronics. Early-stage work may include some remote time, while hands-on assembly and commissioning are performed in person.
Key Responsibilities
- Design vacuum vessels and high-temperature assemblies, including welded boundaries, seals, feedthroughs, and thermal management.
- Engineer systems for the safe handling of reactive and hazardous chemicals, with careful attention to material compatibility.
- Integrate electronics used by the equipment, including heaters, sensors, instrumentation, and power and control wiring.
- Coordinate with outside machine shops and welders, while also completing hands-on assembly and testing directly.
- Create test plans, run tests, and convert results into next-step design revisions.
Required Qualifications
- A degree in mechanical engineering or a related field, and hands-on hardware experience.
- Junior-level scope with an expectation of 0-4 years of active work experience.
- Experience working on hands-on projects end-to-end, paired with a strong passion for engineering.
- Direct experience designing or operating vacuum systems.
- Experience working with chemicals in an engineering setting and a serious safety approach.
- Working knowledge of electronics and instrumentation, including the ability to wire, debug, and specify components.
- Self-motivation and the ability to identify and complete needed tasks.
- Comfort with a startup pace, including periods of longer hours and close team collaboration.
- Fluency in 3D CAD tools such as SolidWorks or Fusion 360, including the ability to move from concept models to complete assemblies.
- Ability to produce fabrication drawings that a machine shop can build from without additional calls, including proper tolerances, GD&T, and weld symbols.
- Comfort with engineering analysis and independent engineering thinking.
- Understanding of designing for manufacturing.
