Job Description

An experienced protection and control engineer will lead Iberdrola Group's protection platforms across AVANGRID's Maine and New York operations. This onsite role in Augusta, Maine, oversees the Protection Engineering group and guides the full spectrum of studies, settings, testing, and commissioning to sustain reliable electric delivery across a sizable transmission and substation footprint. The position carries a salary range of USD 111,332 to 145,800 per year and requires at least a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology along with seven or more years of relevant experience.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, estimation, and analysis of transmission and substation protection systems in support of the capital construction budget and overall performance goals (20%).
  • Own protection system platforms, including settings, testing, and commissioning, developed in-house or by contractors and consultants (25%).
  • Oversee engineering studies to assess equipment and protection performance, analyze operational issues, and support reliability and efficiency improvements.
  • Develop and validate data for engineering analyses and apply sound engineering judgment to solve complex technical problems.
  • Provide expertise in analyzing transmission fault events to ensure protection schemes operate as intended.
  • Deliver clear fault analysis reports to management, detailing corrective actions and lessons learned as needed.
  • Represent the company on regional and national committees.
  • Lead and guide the technical development of the Protection Engineering group.
  • Act as the primary protection engineering expert within the USA organization, offering high-level consultation on complex problems and on emerging technological, regulatory, or political issues.
  • Collaborate across Operating Companies, global affiliates, and internal and external departments.
  • Leverage knowledge to influence and guide department engineers.
  • Provide technical leadership on complex projects with broad departmental impact.
  • Mentor and develop the team to enhance technical skills.
  • Collaborate effectively across departments and liaise with contractors on policy, standards, and best practices.
  • Operate independently with limited supervision.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology.
  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • Professional engineering license preferred.
  • Minimum of 7+ years of technical experience in protection engineering or a related field.
  • Expert knowledge of all aspects of engineering and design, national and international standards, and compliance requirements associated with power system protection.

Technical Skills and Competencies

  • Theoretical engineering expertise spanning planning, operations, design, analytics, modeling, and calculations, with a broad view of the business landscape.
  • Practical engineering experience in planning, design, construction, field work, standardization, economic analyses, and developing business cases.
  • Proficiency in documenting and interpreting engineering information and ensuring alignment with standards and contract requirements.
  • Ability to review and approve engineering work to ensure compliance with company standards, specifications, and contracts.
  • Knowledge of the regulatory and compliance environment at local, state, and federal levels.
