Job Description
The Lead Substation Protection and Control Engineer will manage complex substation protection and control (P&C) design work across 12–500 kV systems, partnering with engineering teams to deliver safe, compliant, and constructible drawing packages through implementation and energization support.
Location and Schedule
- Location: Houston, TX (onsite)

Compensation
- Pay range: USD 107,900 - 195,050 per year
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and support delivery of substation protection and control design projects with a focus on technical quality and on-time performance.
- Create and refine relay one-line diagrams that define protection zones and overall system topology.
- Develop detailed AC schematics showing relationships among current, voltage, and protection devices.
- Produce DC control and protection schematics to support safe and reliable substation equipment operation.
- Design control panels, wiring diagrams, and physical layouts to support efficient construction and long-term maintainability.
- Develop accurate BOMs aligned with project criteria, equipment standards, and client requirements.
- Perform quality control checks on wiring and schematic designs to ensure accuracy, safety, and constructability.
- Contribute across the project lifecycle, from early scoping through final design, implementation, and energization support.
- Provide technical guidance during installation, testing, and commissioning activities.
- Apply National Electrical Safety Code requirements to support safe and compliant designs.
- Interpret and implement utility-specific standards across all design deliverables.
- Partner with design staff to produce complete, accurate drawing packages for each project.
Required Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering (or related degree)
- Experience: 8+ years of substation protection and control design experience
- Experience leading and executing substation protection and control projects.
- Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with internal teams and clients.
- Proven ability to meet deadlines and remain organized in fast-paced or high-pressure situations.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment and provide leadership when needed.
- Self-starter who can take initiative with minimal supervision.
- Strong analytical skills with demonstrated capability to solve engineering challenges independently and collaboratively.
- High level of computer competency and comfort working with engineering tools and software.
- Willingness to travel to project sites and client locations as needed.
