Job Description

Onsite in Chicago, IL, this Senior/Lead role supports complex substation protection and control work across 12–500 kV systems. You will own technical delivery from early scoping through design completion and energization support, with opportunities for growth through mentoring, training, and career advancement at Leidos.

Compensation: USD 107,900 - 195,050 per year. Experience: 8+ years. Education: Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering (or related degree).

Responsibilities

  • Lead and support delivery of substation protection and control design projects, balancing technical excellence with on-time performance.
  • Create and refine relay one-line diagrams defining protection zones and system topology.
  • Develop detailed AC schematics that document relationships among current, voltage, and protection devices.
  • Produce DC control and protection schematics focused on safe and reliable substation equipment operation.
  • Design control panels, wiring diagrams, and physical layouts that enable efficient construction and long-term maintainability.
  • Build accurate BOMs aligned with project criteria, equipment standards, and client requirements.
  • Perform rigorous QC checks on wiring and schematic designs to support accuracy, safety, and constructability.
  • Contribute across the full project lifecycle, including early scoping, implementation, and support through installation, testing, and energization.
  • Provide technical guidance during installation, testing, and commissioning activities.
  • Apply National Electrical Safety Code requirements for safe and compliant designs.
  • Interpret and implement utility-specific standards across all design deliverables.
  • Partner with design staff to deliver complete, accurate drawing packages for each project.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering (or related degree) with 8+ years of substation protection control design experience.
  • Experience leading and executing substation protection and control projects.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with internal teams and clients to support project needs.
  • Proven ability to meet deadlines and stay organized in fast-paced or high-pressure situations.
  • Demonstrated teamwork skills, including the ability to contribute to group success and provide leadership when needed.
  • Self-starter who can take initiative with minimal supervision.
  • Strong analytical abilities with a track record of solving engineering challenges independently and collaboratively.
  • High level of computer competency and comfort using engineering tools and software.
  • Willingness to travel to project sites and client locations as needed.

Pay Range: $107,900.00 - $195,050.00

Additional credentials that may help: Engineer Intern (“EI” or “EIT”) certification, Professional Engineer (“PE”) license, Master’s degree, and field testing/commissioning experience.
