Lead Systems Engineer - Design
Job Description
The Lead Systems Engineer - Design is responsible for guiding the creation and delivery of design documents for building automation systems (BAS), EPMS, and software integration within hyperscale data centers. The role coordinates with MEP/FP trade engineers, product vendors, BIM resources, and client IT teams to ensure cohesive, standards-compliant designs.
Responsibilities
- Act as the client program lead, project trade lead, and subject matter expert for the BAS and EPMS scope on one or more projects or programs.
- Develop client standards and basis of design (BOD), perform feasibility studies, and assist clients with building automation roadmaps.
- Lead the design work for DDC and PLC based BAS and EPMS systems.
- Design the controls network and overall system architecture, covering IT and OT requirements.
- Select instrumentation, sensors, actuators, valves, and other field devices.
- Coordinate with equipment, system, and product vendors to define building automation interface requirements.
- Create and review project books and sheet specifications.
- Develop and review sequences of operations, system diagrams, and point/alarm lists.
- Collaborate with client IT departments on network design, interface details, and security requirements.
- Direct engineering production aspects with internal and external Revit/BIM resources.
- Ensure design document deliverables are produced for design phases including SD, DD, IFP, and IFC.
- Plan and execute Construction Administration (CA) activities remotely and on site.
- Lead building automation focused design reviews and page turns.
- Participate in internal and external quality control and peer reviews.
- Lead project meetings addressing engineering scope with internal and external stakeholders.
- Manage project communications and reporting, and prepare progress reports for stakeholders.
- Track personal hours using company tools and drive attainment of team objectives.
- Manage and execute departmental or organizational projects in alignment with broader goals.
- Ensure adherence to company policies and act as the first point of contact for workplace rules and practices.
- Provide clear direction to team members, maintaining alignment with organizational objectives.
- Improve team efficiency and establish prioritization strategies; mentor and coach junior engineers.
- Resolve conflicts, foster collaboration, and conduct performance evaluations and 1:1 meetings with objectives.
- Participate in organizational strategy discussions to synchronize department and company goals.
- Facilitate interdepartmental communication and align team efforts with company strategies.
- Communicate design details effectively to all stakeholders and optimize resource management and task assignments.
- Adapt resource allocation to project demands and cultivate a cooperative, problem-solving team environment.
- Support hiring and recruiting processes within the team and department.
- Leverage AI-enabled and digital tools to improve efficiency and maintain high-quality output.
- Identify opportunities to improve processes and stay abreast of new technologies and methods that elevate performance.
- Support the adoption of innovative tools across the organization and ensure timely, on-budget completion of tasks and deliverables.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in engineering, construction or a related discipline; minimum eight years of experience.
- Proven ability to guide BAS project designs, including defining standards, assessing needs, and evaluating options.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to complete assignments accurately.
- Proficiency with MS Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams) and excellent file-management skills.
- Experience designing BAS and EPMS packages.
- Understanding of the construction design process, stakeholders, and deliverables.
- Knowledge of code requirements and energy guidelines related to BAS designs.
- Familiarity with data center HVAC applications and BAS control strategies including chilled water plants.
- Knowledge of IoT and smart building solutions.
- Networking knowledge including addressing, VLANs, LANs, switches, and routers.
- Experience with open-source protocols such as BACnet, Modbus, and SNMP.
- Understanding of DDC and PLC systems used in building automation designs.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Ability to leverage AI and emerging technologies to streamline workflows and support innovation.
- Capability to work effectively in a remote environment with strong communication and self-motivation.
- Commitment to safety requirements for both company and site operations.
- Strong analytical skills to prepare documents, reports and correspondence.
- Effective written and verbal communication for technical and non-technical audiences, including direct client interaction.
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team and independently with moderate supervision.
- Ability to perform under pressure and meet tight deadlines, with strong planning and delegation skills.
- Experience mentoring and training junior engineers.

Travel and Relocation Requirements
- Up to 15 percent travel, potentially to any of the 50 states

- Travel is defined as leaving home for business activities including client sites, staff meetings, business development, errands, and industry events
