Mechanical Project Engineer

4D Systems is seeking a Mechanical Project Engineer in Southfield, MI to lead and execute complex mechanical engineering projects from proposal through customer buy off. The role includes accountability for safe delivery while managing budget, schedule, and scope, with direct involvement in mechanical design and engineering change management.

Role Responsibilities

• Perform project work in a manner that protects the health, safety, and welfare of yourself and others, and follow all Company policies and procedures.
• Liaise with the customer, internal functions, and subcontractors to support smooth project execution.
• Evaluate and review customer requirements and specifications and communicate them across the organization.
• Review government and industry specifications.
• Review as-sold PBS and original baseline planning.
• Lead handover meetings with ESC and review lesson learned from previous projects.
• Coordinate system engineers for homogeneous solutions across all commodities.
• Review the engineering make/buy strategy.
• Maintain the project schedule by monitoring progress and manage the project within budget.
• Continuously monitor scope of work and budget alignment.
• Scout suppliers and create RFQ content.
• Identify and document added or reduced scope of work and evaluate potential impact to resources, timing, and costs.
• Be appointed as the Customer Technical Interface.
• Review and update the Project Open Issues List.
• Perform root cause analysis and resolve problems.
• Define, review, and update Project Risk and Opportunities.
• Monitor cost to complete (CTC) and review/update project performance KPI reports (actual cost, forecast to complete, and progress).
• Attend internal, customer, and supplier project reviews.
• Document engineering management lesson learned.
• Be appointed as Dispatcher and Gate keeper in the NC’s management and provide feedback to suppliers.
• React promptly to changing client and product needs, estimate change budgets, and review engineering changes for timing impact.
• Define technical solutions to meet change requirements and determine implementation strategy.
• Develop execution plans for change activities, including timing and duration, and monitor/update change status each phase (progress, forecasted completion date, and open issues where required).
• Compile risk assessments and method statements for site installations.

Required & Preferred Qualifications

• Experience: At least 5 years in the automation industry or automotive company; preferred in the Powertrain area, Machining, and or Assembly.
• Education (preferred): Master or bachelor’s degree in automation, engineering, or business.
• License/Certification: Drivers license (required).
• Commute/Location: Southfield, MI 48034 (required).
• Travel: 25% (required).

Schedule

• Expected hours: 40.0 – 60.0 per week

Compensation

• Salary/Pay: USD 38–40 per hour
