Job Description

Okta is hiring a Principal Data Engineer, People Data to architect, build, and operate scalable data solutions supporting candidate and employee data across the employee lifecycle. This principal role leads complex data engineering initiatives that improve availability, reliability, and integrity of externally relevant metrics.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and continuously improve high-scale data solutions that establish reference architecture and make data access simpler across the organization
  • Create data quality frameworks including monitoring, anomaly detection, and alerting, with governance, lineage tracking, and change management rigor suitable for externally reported numbers
  • Set and drive consistent data modeling patterns, naming conventions, documentation norms, and metric governance standards across the data organization
  • Lead cross-functional technical initiatives across data verticals to accelerate delivery and strengthen data systems
  • Operate effectively in ambiguous environments by making sound technical decisions while balancing short-term delivery with long-term infrastructure investment
  • Champion Data Contracts by implementing data contracts and schema evolution practices to improve reliability across global product teams
  • Mentor and scale engineering capability by guiding senior engineers, leading cross-functional task forces, and promoting engineering excellence with data-driven decision making
  • Stay current with the data landscape by adopting and advocating for emerging technologies and practices that shape the team’s long-term technical direction

Requirements

  • Experience: 10+ years in data engineering, with proven senior or lead experience. Federal government compliance and security requirements experience is highly desirable
  • SQL and data engineering tools: expert-level SQL, ETL/ELT experience using Airflow and dbt, and strong experience with MPP databases including Snowflake and Redshift
  • AWS: extensive hands-on experience with S3, Lambda, EMR, ECR, and EKS
  • HR data expertise: deep knowledge of candidate lifecycle, employee records, compensation, and organizational data
  • Data modeling: experience designing data models for recruiting analytics, engagement signals, and workforce planning metrics
  • Bonus: familiarity with Workday data structures
  • Pipeline development: experience building and maintaining batch and real-time pipelines using Spark and Kafka
  • Lakehouse and warehouse architectures: deep experience with modern architectures using Databricks and Snowflake, plus modern file formats such as Iceberg and Delta
  • AI tools: demonstrated ability to integrate AI tooling to optimize or redesign workflows with measurable impact (efficiency gains and quality improvements)
  • Collaboration: track record of hands-on collaboration with Data Science, Business, and Product teams

Location and Salary

Location: Chicago, IL (hybrid). Compensation: USD 197,000 - 270,600 per year.
