Principal Electrical Design Engineer
Job Description
Coherent Corp. is seeking a Principal Electrical Design Engineer for an on-site role in Fremont, CA to lead the design, simulation, integration, and packaging of Co-Packaged Optics and Optical Engine products, including PIC and electronics IC co-design, advancing concepts to production readiness through close cross-functional collaboration. This position requires a PhD and at least 7 years of experience to guide complex silicon photonics and electronics developments from concept to manufacturing.
Responsibilities
- Lead the end-to-end design and testing of Co-Packaged Optics and Optical Engine products from initial concept through production release.
- Develop co-designs for Silicon Photonics PICs and electronics ICs (including TIA, drivers, and micro-controllers) to achieve DC functionality and high-speed performance.
- Conduct signal integrity and power integrity simulations, perform hands-on high-speed validation, and verify analyses with material effects, de-embedding, and component characterization.
- Model, simulate, and characterize power delivery across die, package, board, and voltage regulator architectures.
- Review PCB stack-ups and assign layers for high-speed routing and PDN considerations.
- Oversee PIC and EIC interconnect schematics and monitor the layout design process.
- Collaborate with internal and external PIC and EIC suppliers to define product specifications, integration design rules, testing protocols, and failure analysis methods.
- Lead optical packaging development to ensure manufacturability and reliability.
- Coordinate with cross-functional teams including Silicon Photonics, IC design, substrate layout, and module design groups.
Requirements
- Deep expertise in optical transceiver electrical and hardware design.
- Proven experience with signal integrity and power integrity analyses, addressing crosstalk, return loss, jitter, EMI, and supply-noise concerns.
- Experience validating high-speed signals and performing verification analyses, including material effects, de-embedding, and component characterization.
Working Conditions
- Full-time, on-site role.
- Occasional off-site meetings or travel may be required.
- Frequent use of computer and office equipment is necessary.
- Regular interaction with team members and external contacts.
- Occasional overtime and flexible hours to accommodate executive needs.
Physical Requirements
- Extended periods of sitting while working on a computer or in meetings.
- Manual dexterity for typing, writing, and handling documents.
- Occasional lifting of up to 20 pounds for administrative tasks.
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Mobility to move within the office to attend meetings and collaborate with colleagues.
Safety Requirements
- Mandatory safety training and adherence to site EHS procedures and Corporate EHS standards, including required PPE.
- Management ensures safety and environmental procedures are followed, including risk assessments, training, work instructions, PPE availability, and ongoing compliance monitoring.
Quality and Environmental Responsibilities
- Depending on location, may be responsible for implementing and maintaining ISO 9000, 9001, 14001 and other applicable standards within the Quality Management System and Environmental Management System.
