Principal Engineer (I&C Design Engineer)
Job Description
Principal Engineer (I&C Design Engineer) provides I&C/control design engineering staff augmentation to SRNS in Aiken, SC (onsite).
Responsibilities
- Deliver design engineering staff augmentation support to SRNS.
- Perform engineering analysis and support design activities using SRNS processes and procedures.
- Conduct field walkdowns to support engineering work.
- Support design development activities as directed by programmatic guidance from SRNS.
- Produce I&C/control design output documents, including (but not limited to):
- P&IDs
- Control Logics
- Loop Diagrams
- Instrument Indices
- Setpoint Lists
- Instrument and Control Valve Specifications
- DCS and PLC Design
- Instrument Location and Installation Design
- Panel Layouts
- Vendor Document Review
- Provide engineering services following SRNS processes and procedures and SRNS programmatic guidance.
Requirements
- BS Degree in one of the following: Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, or I&C Engineering; or current registration as a Professional Engineer in one of the listed disciplines.
- 10 years of direct I&C design experience (within the last 15 years) in the nuclear or process chemical industry.
- Design experience with process control instrumentation, PLCs, and distributed control systems.
- Proficiency using MicroStation 2D CADD software is required.
- Ability to perform weekly field walkdowns of the job site for engineering work being performed.
- Walkdowns may include:
- Construction sites with uneven surfaces and work in progress
- Walking distances of more than half a mile
- Climbing ladders to access remote areas
- Dressing in protective clothing
- Environments where a respirator is required
- Obtain and maintain a DOE “Q” security clearance.
- Subcontractor must have an active eFOCI registration and approved Facility Level Clearance with DOE/NNSA.
- Proof of U.S. citizenship is required.

Preferred Qualifications
- Active DOE clearance (L or Q) within the past 2 years is preferred.
- Previous SRS Design Engineering or DOE facility experience is preferred.
Work Environment / Physical Demands
- Office environment; ability to operate standard office equipment and keyboards.
- Light to moderate lifting may be required for packages and other items.
- Ability to walk short distances.
- May be regularly required to stand, sit, talk, hear, reach, stoop, kneel, and use hands and fingers to operate a computer, telephone, and keyboard.
Area Security Access
- Candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE “Q” security clearance.
- An active DOE clearance is not initially required to perform assigned duties.
- After award, the selected candidate will be notified when to apply for a clearance based on specific work assignments.
- Subcontractor must have an active eFOCI registration and approved Facility Level Clearance with DOE/NNSA.
