Job Description

The Principal I&C Design Engineer role will support the Savannah River Site in Aiken, South Carolina across two open positions. In this onsite position, you will define the scope of I&C technical programs while delivering advanced design support and leadership for complex engineering work, including field walk-downs and program planning and reporting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Define the scope of technical programs and develop high-quality solutions for unique or controversial challenges.
  • Apply company and industry requirements and integrate site systems to deliver quality, timely, and cost-effective results.
  • Provide quality guidance and assistance to less senior professionals on related tasks.
  • Use advanced technical expertise within an I&C specialization, or broad experience across multiple technical fields, to resolve complex problems.
  • Incorporate advanced technical practices and manage complex features, including difficult coordination or oversight requirements and application of new or special materials or processes.
  • Lead in determining solutions to complex problems and be recognized as an expert within one or more functional technical areas.
  • Provide direction and carry responsibility both inside and outside department lines for programs pursuing new approaches or new applications of existing engineering or scientific principles.
  • Evaluate program results and prepare reports and recommendations based on those evaluations.
  • Identify and recommend improvements when established technology components and methodologies are inadequate for the required solution.
  • Stay current on technology advancements as applied to the area of technical expertise.
  • Prepare plans with schedules, budgets, and personnel requirements for solving technical tasks identified by management.
  • Develop schedules, monitor progress, track budget expenditures, and review the quality of work performed.
  • Communicate results and objectives verbally and in manuscript form to customers, colleagues, and management.
  • Occasionally prepare reports for external publication.
  • Advance expertise through leadership in local technical societies.
  • Demonstrate creative engineering capability through patent disclosures, problem solving, engineering reports, technical papers, and articles.

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in an applicable science or engineering discipline and 5+ years of experience, or an MS with 8+ years of experience, or a BS with 10+ years of experience (BS in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, I&C Engineering, or current registration as a Professional Engineer in one of the listed disciplines).
  • Ten (10) years of direct I&C design experience within the last 15 years in the nuclear or process chemical industry.
  • Demonstrated design experience with process control instrumentation, PLCs, and distributed control systems.
  • Required proficiency using MicroStation 2D Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) software.
  • Ability to perform weekly field walk-downs, including work in construction environments with uneven surfaces and ongoing work, walking distances over half a mile, climbing ladders to remote areas, and dressing out in protective clothing.
  • Possess an active DOE clearance (L or Q) within the past two (2) years.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE “Q” security clearance.
