Principal Power Electronics Engineer
Job Description
Johnson Controls’ Chillers product group is seeking a Principal Power Electronics Engineer to help design, test, and sustain Variable Speed Drives (VSD) used in chiller applications. This onsite role is based in New Freedom, PA, and it requires commuting distance or relocation.
In this position, you will act as a technical leader within the Power Electronics Department, shaping development approaches, guiding electrical/electronic circuitry design, and supporting troubleshooting across both field and factory environments.
Role Overview
- Serve as a technical expert within the Power Electronics Department responsible for designing, testing, and maintaining power electronics products and systems for Johnson Controls’ chiller applications.
- Provide technical direction by determining the best techniques, procedures, and/or theories applicable to power electronics product and system development.
- Act as the technical lead for troubleshooting field and factory issues across the range of power electronics products and systems for Johnson Controls’ chillers.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop compliance procedures for the creation of electrical/electronic circuitry designs.
- Define and interpret design specifications; design electrical/electronic circuitry to meet requirements; analyze product design requirements and recommend solutions.
- Prepare and coordinate the release of documentation supporting component design and manufacturing.
- Participate in preliminary design and systems architecture; conduct analysis of cost impacts for proposed modifications, upgrades, and new implementations of application software.
- Perform feasibility studies and systems analysis for new applications or major modifications to existing systems.
- Collaborate with engineers, designers, and technicians on assigned work.
- Forecast and schedule work activities, and define processes for repetitive tasks.
- Coordinate with the team to support specific work assignments across the development lifecycle.
Required Qualifications
- Master degree in Electrical Engineering with specialization in Power Electronics
- 7+ years of industry experience in Power Electronics

Preferred Qualifications
- Ph.D. degree focused on Power Electronics
- Strong experience with power electronics controls
- Strong experience with IGBT based inverters
- Strong experience using Matlab/Simulink, OPAL-RT, and Saber
Compensation and Benefits
- Salary: USD 100,000 - 135,000 per yearly (salary determined based on education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities; internal equity; and alignment with market data)
