Job Description
The Product Design Electrical Engineer for AWS Data Center Engineering focuses on medium voltage switchgear and transformer design to deliver resilient, cost-effective electrical distribution products for AWS datacenters. This onsite role is based in Herndon, VA, with a yearly salary range of USD 116,800 to 160,000.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with internal partner teams to gather customer input and define design requirements for new products.
- Direct the design, development, and qualification of critical electrical power distribution equipment for AWS datacenters, with emphasis on MV switchgear and transformers, aligning interfaces with LV switchgear and distribution systems.
- Prepare Capex and Opex budgets, accounting for development costs with vendors, prototyping, testing, and specialized tooling needs.
- Partner with global suppliers and manufacturers to specify appropriate electrical equipment and components, ensuring resilience across tier 2 to 3 supply chains.
- Guarantee compliance with UL, CSA, IEC and applicable federal, state, and municipal codes across multiple countries through targeted testing.
- Validate designs via prototypes, pre-production runs, and first-of-kind builds, performing DFx and value engineering analyses at each stage and updating documentation accordingly.
- Collaborate with field engineering and commissioning teams to test and validate installation, operation, and performance of the electrical products.
- Provide manufacturing support for new products on concurrent projects in multiple geographic locations.
- Serve as a leader within the product development team and across internal and external teams supporting the data center program.
Requirements
- Minimum of five years of industrial or commercial engineering experience in mission-critical facilities, including data centers, power generation, or oil and gas environments.
- At least five years of commissioning experience.
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
- Experience researching new designs, technologies, and construction methods for data center equipment and facilities.
- Knowledge of mechanical or electrical systems design.
