Senior Associate, R&D Tax Credits - Software Engineer

KPMG’s Accounting Methods and Credit Services practice is hiring a Senior Associate, R&D Tax Credits - Software Engineer in Philadelphia, PA (onsite). In this role, you’ll help clients maximize R&D Tax Credit outcomes by connecting software development work to tax definitions, supported by technical research grounded in current law (including section 41). You’ll collaborate closely with cross-functional KPMG engineers while translating complex technical activity into clear, accurate tax treatment.

What you’ll do

• Support R&D Tax Credit consulting for multi-disciplinary teams, including leading client interviews and discussions
• Conduct technical research aligned with current tax law and guidelines, including section 41
• Develop and apply business and industry expertise through ongoing research and collaboration
• Use software development knowledge, including object-oriented programming concepts and database management system design patterns, to inform technical-to-tax analysis
• Lead SME interviews and review documentation to translate technical software development activities into tax definitions for qualified research and development
• Analyze technical documents to determine and document the appropriate tax treatment of technical items
• Create technical narratives that convey concepts using standard industry terminology, efficiently and accurately
• Partner with cross-functional KPMG engineers to deliver R&D tax credit consulting, including leading interviews with technical subject matter experts and ensuring findings meet tax law requirements

Qualifications

• Minimum 2 years of recent full-time industry experience in product management, technology sales, or technology consulting
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science / Engineering, MIS, or equivalent degree from an accredited college or university
• Proficiency in at least one programming language: Java, C, C++, C#, Visual Basic, or similar
• Working knowledge of SQL, database concepts, common software design patterns, and data structures and algorithms
• Working knowledge of cloud computing (AWS, Azure)
• Knowledge of common computer infrastructure concepts, web-based or n-tiered architectures, and performance tuning of databases and middleware
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, including experience engaging senior technical management, solution and enterprise architects, and owners to gather requirements, support technical sales, or conduct technology evaluations
• Ability to travel and work at client locations
