Senior Engineer, Controls
Job Description
The J. M. Smucker Company seeks a Senior Engineer, Controls to lead the plant power and control systems at its Buffalo, NY site. This role oversees equipment specifications, maintenance, troubleshooting, and technician development to meet reliability targets, while driving systems optimization, power distribution, and safety training for the site’s electrical power and process control skills. You will work alongside plant leadership to ensure regulatory compliance, robust data handling from MES and PLC systems, and the successful implementation of control innovations across the facility.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the lead administrator and troubleshooter for the site’s power and control systems and participate as a key member of plant technical leadership
- Contribute to the creation and governance of power and control standards, ensuring these guidelines are applied across all projects and upgrades
- Lead the execution of the site masterplan for power and controls, including knowledge of the installed base and a replacement plan for obsolete equipment and technologies
- Create and maintain a sustainable program for developing the skills of Electrical & Instrumentation technicians
- Ensure technician compliance with local and national regulator codes (NFPA 70, NFPA 70e, NFPA 79 and OSHA 1910)
- Validate MES data from PLCs and assist Process Engineers in conditioning PLC data for effective data analysis, including application development
- Support the design and implementation of machine control and process automation applications, including control strategies, HMI design, MES applications and KPI development
- Identify losses and develop plans to eliminate them in safety, quality, reliability, and cost areas
- Own key elements for power and control systems, including electrical safety practices (LOTO, PPE, energized work permits, low voltage qualifications) and Quality/CCP compliance (checkweighers, metal detectors, vision systems, ingredient flows, temperatures)
- Collaborate with leadership on selecting and installing new equipment; act as the technical expert and train others on new controls
- Act as project manager for initiatives ranging from E&I focused projects to full capital projects
- Provide power and controls engineering support for capital initiatives
- Learn and apply control, simulation and process modeling technologies to analyze and improve overall process and packaging operations
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering
- 2 years of controls or electrical engineering experience
- Understanding of machine and process control hardware, instrumentation and software (examples include Allen Bradley PLC, ControlLogix, Wonderware HMI, and Rockwell FactoryTalk)

Additional Skills and Experience
- Prior manufacturing experience
- Mechanical and electrical experience in food manufacturing
