Job Description

This senior role in electrical transit vehicle engineering is based onsite in Los Angeles, California. The position leads complex engineering projects, reviews submittals against Metro standards, and delivers design and construction support for bus and rail transit initiatives at LA Metro.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize, assign, implement, and oversee engineering projects in line with budget and schedule constraints.
  • Engage with user departments to respond to service requests, gathering details to define engineering requirements that satisfy user needs.
  • Deliver engineering design services and provide design support during construction; assist during bidding and award phases, construction management, project closeout, activation, and startup activities for bus and rail projects.
  • Assist in developing workplans, safety guidelines, maintenance requirements, and operational needs for design efforts.
  • Review contract documents, shop drawings, specifications, RFIs, and detailed design reviews for compliance with codes, project specs, and Metro criteria.
  • Evaluate designs for quality, constructability, and cost effectiveness; propose design changes as needed.
  • Ensure project alignment with design criteria, standards, workplans, safety guidelines, maintenance requirements, and operational needs.
  • Manage contract document receivables and the project budget for assigned initiatives.
  • Update and enforce Metro Design Standards and Criteria.
  • Prepare preliminary design documentation for future projects.
  • Coordinate projects with utility companies, railroad entities, and city, county, and state agencies as required.
  • Conduct field visits for research and inventory purposes.
  • Participate in the engineering configuration management process to maintain current records for bus and rail facilities and systems.
  • Collaborate with in-house engineering and construction disciplines, consultants, and contractors to identify and resolve issues impacting progress or operational performance.
  • Provide resident engineering oversight and quality control inspection services.
  • Offer guidance, coaching, training, and supervision of staff within the area of expertise.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related field; a Master’s degree in a related area is preferred.
  • Minimum six years of relevant experience, or three years in a supervisory engineering role, including design and construction of public transit or major public agency projects; some positions may require specialized experience in the assignment area.
  • Valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to use an alternate transportation method when necessary to perform essential functions.

Essential Knowledge — Knowledge Of

  • Theories, principles, and current practices in engineering analysis, design, and construction within the applicable discipline
  • Foundations of architectural, civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, vehicle, systems design, and environmental engineering related to the assigned discipline
  • Software tools relevant to the discipline, including AutoCAD, MicroStation, Revit, and EnergyPro
  • Engineering design codes and applicable federal, state (Title 24), and local regulations
  • Engineering mathematics used for analyses such as heat load, ducting, and piping pressure loss
  • Local and state governmental authorities and approvals processes
  • Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Contract administration and budgeting, as well as project management and control practices

  • Assess situations, identify problems, and propose solutions
  • Exercise sound judgment and creative problem solving in engineering decisions
  • Understand, interpret, and apply codes, regulations, specifications, and contract terms
  • Update Metro criteria and baseline specifications as needed
  • Meet tight deadlines and manage multiple tasks concurrently
  • Read, write, speak, and understand English proficiently

Working Conditions
