Senior Roadway Engineer
Job Description
The Senior Roadway Engineer position, based onsite in Fairfax, Virginia, supports Whitman, Requardt & Associates in expanding its Northern Virginia roadway practice from the Fairfax office. The role emphasizes planning and design leadership for highway projects, supervision of junior engineers, and coordination with multiple design disciplines to deliver complete project outcomes.
Responsibilities
- Lead the planning and design of assigned roadway projects by guiding junior engineers and coordinating with other design disciplines to produce comprehensive project deliverables.
- Contribute to a variety of project types including intersection and interchange design, new roadway alignments, widenings, interstate design, and pedestrian and bicycle facilities.
- Oversee project development, coordinating with clients and subconsultants to ensure alignment with schedules and quality expectations.
- Design horizontal and vertical alignments, develop roadway plans and profiles, conduct roadside evaluations, maintain traffic design, and prepare construction plans, specifications, cost estimates, and technical reports.
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited program
- Professional Engineer license in the Commonwealth of Virginia
- Minimum of 16 years of relevant highway engineering experience, including work with VDOT
- Strong oral and written communication skills across all levels of the organization
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple assignments simultaneously
- Experience with design software such as MicroStation, OpenRoads, and AutoCAD
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook)
