Senior Software Engineer (Java) - Card Payments
Job Description
Senior Software Engineer on Adyen's Card Payments team in Chicago will shape the design and architecture of a scalable airline processing platform, mentor engineers, and drive the merchant-facing roadmap.
Responsibilities
- Contribute your perspective on engineering best practices and standards.
- Collaborate with teams across time zones to drive projects to completion.
- Lead complex technical initiatives from requirements analysis through design, implementation, testing, and production rollout.
- Be hands-on with implementation while providing technical guidance and mentoring to teammates.
- Identify bottlenecks and improve platform components for robustness and scalability.
- Develop with scale in mind, ensuring features perform under heavy usage.
- Move fast and iterate often, delivering live functionalities within the first weeks that impact many merchants and shoppers.
Requirements
- Minimum 8 years of professional engineering experience, currently at Senior Software Engineer level or equivalent.
- Strong communication skills, able to explain complex technical concepts to diverse stakeholders.
- Flexible, collaborative team player with meticulous attention to detail.
- Experience with large-scale distributed systems.
- Willingness to travel domestically and internationally.
- Proficiency in building Java based web services, including RESTful and SOAP.
- Experience designing performant relational database models, preferably PostgreSQL or similar.
- Familiarity with architectural patterns such as event-driven architectures or message queuing systems.

Compensation
- Salary: USD 180,000 - 243,000 per year
