Job Description

Humana is seeking a Senior User Interface Design Engineer to help shape intuitive, high-trust digital experiences across clinical tools and care-facing platforms. In this onsite role in Washington, DC, you will combine strategic product thinking with hands-on execution, taking work from discovery through pixel-perfect delivery.

You will partner closely with product, engineering, and clinical stakeholders to reduce cognitive load for care teams and improve clarity for patient care, with a strong focus on accessibility, health literacy, and privacy-aware design in regulated environments.

Responsibilities

  • Own end-to-end design for assigned product verticals, covering discovery through pixel-perfect delivery, including workflow design, information architecture, and interface design for data-dense, human-in-the-loop clinical workflows.
  • Support and contribute to design systems, patterns, and scalable design standards.
  • Provide design recommendations and explain the rationale to stakeholders, incorporating feedback and driving alignment across teams.
  • Build interactive, high-fidelity prototypes to model complex interactions, validate user flows, and contribute to how AI-assisted tools are incorporated into the design process as internal tooling access expands.
  • Plan and execute qualitative user research, usability testing, and feedback sessions with users and stakeholders, iterating rapidly based on results.
  • Champion WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility standards and plain-language design principles to ensure inclusivity across varying levels of digital and health literacy.
  • Approach design with sensitivity to privacy, patient trust, and regulatory requirements.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of hands-on product design experience (UI/UX) delivering digital products, web applications, or complex enterprise platforms from concept to launch, with a strong portfolio of complex interfaces showing visual hierarchy and clean execution for data-dense applications.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Human-Computer Interaction, Design, or related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Expert-level Figma skills, including auto-layout, tokens, component variables, and interactive prototyping.
  • Ability to balance strategic thinking with hands-on execution within established design systems and standards.
  • Proven ability to manage competing priorities, navigate ambiguous requirements, and maintain high design quality in a fast-paced, iterative environment.
  • Outstanding communication skills, including articulating design decisions and discussing technical constraints and tradeoffs with engineers and cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated success using design to improve business and customer outcomes, such as patient satisfaction, engagement, retention, or operational efficiency.
  • AI fluency, including understanding how AI-driven features behave in-product (latency handling, confidence scoring, human-in-the-loop workflows) and interest in AI-assisted design tools.

Technologies

  • Figma
  • WCAG 2.1 AA

Benefits

  • Medical, dental and vision benefits
  • 401(k) retirement savings plan
  • Time off (including paid time off, company and personal holidays, paid parental and caregiver leave)
  • Short-term and long-term disability
  • Life insurance

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience designing within clinical, healthcare, or health-tech environments, or other regulated/high-stakes domains.
  • Experience designing interfaces for complex data pipelines, dynamic real-time data, or decision-support tools.

Additional Information

  • Candidates must live close to one of the designated IT locations: NYC, NY; Louisville, KY; Tampa, FL; Fort Lauderdale, FL; Dallas/Frisco, TX; Boston, MA; Washington, D.C; Atlanta, GA; Nashville, TN; Chicago, IL; or Charlotte, NC.
  • Location: Washington, DC (onsite)
