Software Engineer III - IBM i (AS/400) Engineer
Job Description
JPMorganChase is seeking a Software Engineer III for IBM i (AS/400) within the Commercial & Investment Bank - Digital & Platform Services. The role centers on designing and delivering secure, scalable software solutions across diverse technical areas to support the firm’s objectives, with a focus on AI-assisted development and architecture artifacts. This on-site position is based in Plano, Texas.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and troubleshoot software solutions with the ability to think beyond routine approaches to solve complex problems.
- Produce secure, high-quality production code and maintain algorithms that integrate with the appropriate systems.
- Utilize enterprise-authorized AI coding assist tools to improve code quality, delivery speed, and productivity on complex deliverables such as code generation, refactoring, unit-test creation, and documentation.
- Validate outputs through peer reviews, automated testing, and adherence to secure coding standards.
- Share learnings and reusable patterns to enhance the overall effectiveness of the team.
- Apply knowledge of the Software Development Life Cycle toolchain, including AI-assisted development and automation capabilities, to maximize automation value.
- Produce architecture and design artifacts for complex applications and ensure design constraints are met by software implementation.
- Gather, analyze, and synthesize data to create visualizations and reports that support continuous improvement of software applications and systems.
- Proactively identify hidden problems and data patterns to drive improvements in coding hygiene and system architecture.
- Contribute to software engineering communities of practice and events exploring new and emerging technologies.

Requirements
- 3+ years of applied software engineering experience and relevant formal training or certification.
- Hands-on experience using enterprise-authorized AI-assisted development tools within the work environment, with ability to critically evaluate and refine AI-generated outputs for correctness, performance, and security.
- IBM iSeries (AS/400) development experience with DB2 for i including files, views, indexes, triggers, and stored procedures.
- Experience with LANSA and Visual LANSA IDE development plus LANSA upgrade planning and execution.
- Knowledge of IBM MQ and CDC replication technologies (InfoSphere CDC / IIDR or equivalent).
- Proficiency in Java and Python on IBM i in the PASE environment; strong debugging skills (STRDBG, STRISDB, Service Entry Points, job logs, Visual Explain, remote Java/Python debugging).
- Experience with application resiliency and maintenance, including HA/DR support, PTF management, performance tuning, and remediation of technical debt.
- Familiarity with Git-based version control, Aldon LMI, Robot Scheduling, and ServiceNow.
- Understanding of responsible AI use in engineering workflows, data sensitivity considerations, secure handling of inputs/outputs, and adherence to resiliency and security expectations.
- Exposure to REST/SOAP web services from IBM i or Python/Java and familiarity with Rational Developer for i (RDi) or VS Code with Code for IBM i extension.
- Experience with ITIL foundations, SAFe or other scaled Agile frameworks, and CI/CD pipelines in an IBM i context.
