Specialist, Software Engineer (RUST)

The Specialist, Software Engineer focused on Rust role supports mission-critical Integrated Systems & Encryption programs by guiding adoption and integration efforts across the software development life cycle. The position involves working on a Scrum team, translating requirements into working, maintainable solutions while partnering with cross-functional engineering stakeholders.

Role Overview

This role supports the engineering team in software application development with an emphasis on Rust. Responsibilities include leading Rust adoption across multiple product lines, contributing to interface and system performance requirements, and participating in requirements analysis, design, implementation, integration, and formal test activities.

Key Responsibilities

• Support engineering team members in software application development, with a focus on Rust.
• Lead the adoption and deployment of Rust, including techniques, idioms, design patterns, and tooling across multiple product lines.
• Apply computer science, engineering, and mathematical analysis concepts and principles to software development for target application(s).
• Collaborate with cross-functional engineering members to develop and evaluate interfaces between software libraries and to address operational performance requirements and overall system design.
• Participate in all phases of the software development life cycle, including requirements analysis, design, implementation, integration, and formal test.
• Investigate root causes of complex issues and implement solutions, independently or with a multi-discipline team.
• Develop software test plans, procedures, and other relevant technical documentation.
• Use modeling tools and equipment to establish operating data, conduct experimental tests, prototype, and evaluate results.
• Participate in peer reviews, identify defects, track them, and support defect repair.
• Utilize multiple software languages, primarily Rust and C/C++, to develop code.
• Travel to other company locations at a rate of more than 10% to support onboarding, integration, or Scrum activities.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree and a minimum of 4 years of prior relevant experience.
• OR Graduate Degree and a minimum of 2 years of prior related experience.
• OR, in lieu of a degree, a minimum of 8 years of prior related experience.
• Active Department of Defense (DoD) Secret clearance.
• 1+ years of experience developing Rust software for production systems, with a deep understanding of the language.
• At least 2 years of experience with C/C++ development and object-oriented design.

Preferred Additional Skills

• Object-oriented design and implementation experience, including exposure to software modeling and UML tools such as IBM Rhapsody or MagicDraw/Cameo.
• Experience converting legacy C/C++ code to Rust.
• Experience with Information Assurance and/or cryptography.
• Experience developing software applications for the Linux operating system.
• Experience developing software libraries.
• Experience with NSA Type 1 certification or other software certification.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Schedule

9/80 Regular schedule: 9 out of every 14 days totaling 80 hours worked, with every other Friday off.

Compensation and Location

• Location: Herndon, VA (On-site)
• Estimated Salary: USD 97,000 - 180,000 per year
• Travel: more than 10% (to other company locations)
