Sr Engineer

The Senior Engineer role at Energy Transfer Partners is an onsite position based in Indianapolis, IN. The incumbent leads engineering design, project management, and technical support to ensure the safe and reliable operation of natural gas pipelines and compressor stations, with training in the company’s safety, operation, and maintenance procedures.

Responsibilities

• Lead engineering design and project management for designated projects in accordance with company specifications, industry standards, and federal regulations.
• Develop project cost estimates, define scopes of work, and establish schedules.
• Guide and supervise in-house and third-party engineering and CAD design personnel.
• Compile material requisitions and specify materials for construction procurement.
• Conduct technical evaluation of vendor quotes, engineering drawings, and manufacturing specifications and procedures.
• Assess preliminary drawings for clarity, completeness, and accuracy, and approve them for bidding and construction.
• Produce weekly progress reports, monitor cost and schedule performance, and report results to management.
• Inspect as-built drawings for compliance with company standards, industry norms, and regulatory requirements.
• Support Field Operations and team members with engineering issues, code interpretation, and technical questions.
• Create Construction Bid packages and draft contracts for the selected bidder.
• Provide financial oversight and adjust projects when cost forecasts exceed approved tolerances.
• Coordinate with Specialists, Operations teams, Gas Control, Integrity, Planning, Marketing, and customers to minimize outages.
• Maintain familiarity with applicable Federal Regulations, Company Engineering Standards and SOPs, and relevant industry standards.
• Provide technical support for right-of-way permitting and acquisitions, including drawing preparation for road and railroad crossings and approval of property plats used to secure necessary right of way and temporary construction space.
• Review external design drawings for encroachments on Company Facilities, resolve conflicts, and outline initial scope for relocations as needed.

Requirements

• A Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Civil, or Electrical Engineering.
• Minimum of 6 years of experience in gas transmission or a related field.
• Knowledge of 49 CFR 192, ASME B31.8, API, and AGA standards.
• Experience in the engineering, design, and operation of natural gas transmission systems.
• Proficient with Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and MS Projects.
• familiarity with vendor sizing and selection programs for control valves, regulators, and relief valves, plus pipeline flow calculations, road crossing stress calculations, area reinforcement calculations, and related engineering software.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with excellent analytical and organizational abilities.
• Self-starter capable of working with minimal supervision and managing multiple projects amid shifting priorities and regulatory requirements.
• Effective time management and the ability to work within a team environment while assisting colleagues as needed.
• Comfort interfacing with a broad range of contacts including technical staff, operations, risk management, contractors, vendors, attorneys, and various levels of management.

Working Conditions

• Typically normal office environment.
• Ability to remain in a stationary position for 50 percent of the time due to prolonged sitting or standing.
• Ability to travel approximately 20 percent of the time, with occasional overnight stays.
• Occasional visits to industrial or manufacturing settings, with exposure to materials, chemicals, extreme temperatures, and loud machinery; use of required personal protective equipment.
• Residence within 45 minutes of the reporting work location is expected.
• Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain a safe driving record.
