Job Description
Senior Principal Embedded Software Engineer role at Pierce Manufacturing, onsite in Greenville, WI.
Responsibilities
- Design and develop embedded software for connected vehicle solutions including telematics, edge computing, remote diagnostics, over-the-air updates, vehicle network integration, and video recording/streaming capabilities.
- Provide technical leadership by balancing hands-on development with strategic direction to ensure solutions are scalable, reliable, secure, maintainable, and cost-effective.
- Drive engineering excellence by establishing architecture standards and best practices for production-grade software, and mentor teams to raise technical rigor.
- Ensure execution excellence and delivery by improving backlog readiness, removing technical roadblocks, and helping the team meet sprint and release commitments in an Agile environment.
- Conduct hands-on vehicle validation by testing inside trucks to verify software performance under real-world operating conditions.
- Collaborate with embedded, cloud, and front-end engineers and the product owner to resolve cross-functional challenges and deliver end-to-end solutions.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent field.
- 8+ years of embedded software development using C and C++, with Rust experience considered a standout.
- Experience developing and testing embedded software on Embedded Linux platforms.
- Experience with networking concepts and protocols including TCP/IP and UDP.
- Strong understanding of software architecture, design patterns, and embedded software development best practices.
- Strong technical leadership and collaboration skills, with experience leading technical projects while remaining hands-on in software development.
- Experience developing connected mobile assets or telematics platforms, including cloud-connected architectures, OTA updates, cellular-connected devices, and remote fleet management solutions.
- Ability and willingness to perform hands-on testing on vehicles, including working inside vehicle cabs and conducting testing in manufacturing and field environments. Occasional travel to customer sites may be required.

Standout Qualifications
- Experience with automotive or heavy-duty vehicle networks, including CAN and J1939.
- Experience delivering portable software across multiple embedded hardware platforms, including cross-compilation, platform abstraction, and migrating applications to new processor architectures or operating systems.
- Experience porting embedded applications to new hardware platforms, including board bring-up, BSP integration, hardware/software debugging, and platform validation.
- Experience with multimedia frameworks (FFmpeg, GStreamer) and video capture, streaming, and media processing technologies, including RTP, RTSP, WebRTC, or similar protocols.
- Strong initiative and the ability to navigate ambiguity, influence without authority, and solve complex technical problems.
Compensation
Salary: USD 104,100 - 173,900 per year
