Job Description

Responsibilities

  • Layout of PWBs/PCBs, including flex circuits, interconnect routing, and drawing generation
  • Calculate layer stack-up based on industry standards, supplier capabilities, and engineering requirements
  • Create and document electronic data file outputs for fabrication and manufacturing
  • Interface with electrical and mechanical engineers to address component placement, routing, and mechanical fit for rigid, flex, and rigid-flex assemblies
  • Apply knowledge of electrical and mechanical behavior of PWBs/PCBs to inform layout decisions such as impedance matching, differential pairs, stress considerations, and component orientation
  • Incorporate PWB/PCB change notices into design work
  • Verify designs and drawings for manufacturability
  • Coordinate and lead design reviews with engineering, quality, and manufacturing personnel

Requirements

  • Master's degree in a STEM field with 6 years of directly related experience OR bachelor's degree in STEM with 8 years of directly related experience OR 12 years of directly related experience in lieu of a degree
  • Drafting and design experience in PCB design for fabrication and PWB layer stack up for digital, RF, mixed signal, and power supply CCAs
  • Experience with Cadence Allegro or a similar CAD tool
  • Knowledge of industry specifications and design for manufacturing rules for CCA and PWB design, fabrication, and manufacturing
  • Ability to read drawings and schematic diagrams
  • U.S. Citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance

About the role and team

The Principal Design Engineer role focuses on planning, laying out, drawing, and revising PWB and CCA fabrication data. The position uses Cadence Allegro to produce major layout drawings in alignment with engineering drafting practices, military specifications, and industry standards. This role supports multiple programs at the Rolling Meadows campus and collaborates closely with DDPIE, the Design Data and Product Integrity Engineering organization, to provide engineering support across programs.
