Sr. Research Engineer - Combustion / CFD
Job Description
The Sr. Research Engineer for CFD role at Rheem Manufacturing focuses on advancing combustion and computational fluid dynamics across water heating and air handling platforms. The position involves mentoring engineers, driving simulation-driven product improvements, and partnering with cross-functional teams to embed simulation into the product lifecycle.
Responsibilities
- Perform CFD simulations to examine combustion and related flow phenomena in water heating and air handling systems.
- Develop and implement models for combustion processes, chemical kinetics, heat transfer, and turbulence.
- Leverage commercial or open-source CFD tools such as StarCCM+, ANSYS Fluent, CONVERGE, and OpenFOAM to solve complex fluid dynamics problems.
- Advance simulation capabilities in CFD, FEA, acoustics, casting, and optimization to support research and new product introductions across water heating and air product lines.
- Collaborate with design teams to clarify scope and select appropriate simulation principles and tools for each task.
- Coordinate with product development teams to plan experiments and implement simulation findings into design decisions.
- Explore new technologies for product value through first principles analysis and 1D or 3D simulation approaches.
- Maintain awareness of emerging simulation technologies and methodologies to keep the team at the leading edge of industry practice.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Chemical Engineering
- Minimum of five years of experience in industrial simulations, R&D development, and product development
- Proven track record in evaluating, analyzing, optimizing, qualifying, and implementing thermal solutions for consumer or industrial products
- Strong foundation in thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, combustion physics, and chemical kinetics
- Proficiency with CFD tools such as ANSYS Fluent, StarCCM+, CONVERGE CFD, OpenFOAM, or equivalent software
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with a history of delivering innovative engineering solutions
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate across functional teams
- Demonstrated capability as a technical expert and advisor, guiding complex simulation challenges and engineering decisions
- Ability to prioritize and manage simulation activities across projects, including planning, execution, and delivery of results
