Staff Software Engineer
Job Description
Realtor.com Careers is hiring a Staff Software Engineer to support the Organic Growth Engineering team focused on technical SEO and organic social sharing. This role sets the strategy and reliability direction for crawling, indexing, rendering, and share-link deeplinking, including end-to-end incident response for issues that cross platform boundaries and impact organic performance.
Working onsite/hybrid from Austin, TX, you will own key technical decisions and operational frameworks for SEO at scale and for AppsFlyer-driven attribution tied to shared listing links.
Responsibilities
- Set technical strategy for SEO at scale, including crawl budget, indexation, canonicalization, robots, sitemaps, and rendering across millions of pages, with QA testing methodology and regression-testing standards prior to production changes.
- Own technical strategy for organic social sharing and deeplinking, covering how shared listing links resolve, including AppsFlyer link generation, attribution, and in-app versus web fallback, plus standards for share-link reliability.
- Lead SEO and deeplinking incident response by diagnosing problems across the systems that both channels depend on, including edge and delivery, bot management, routing, rendering, content services, and attribution/MMP infrastructure, and driving the right owners to resolution.
- Own the escalation framework, run war rooms, and ensure post-mortems close the loop into new alerts, gates, and runbooks.
- Define SLOs/SLIs and the on-call model with the observability engineer for crawl/indexation health and deeplink resolution/attribution health.
- Maintain visibility into SEO- and share-impacting changes through a single reviewed view of what is shipping that touches organic-critical pages or the share/deeplink path, partnering with Organic Growth PMs including the Director, Organic Growth.
- Own log-file, crawl-budget, and deeplink-performance analysis, including what to look for in crawler behavior (crawl waste, over-crawl patterns, index drift) and deeplink performance (resolution failure rate, attribution loss, in-app versus web fallback rate), with observability/data engineering support to surface insights.
- Raise the technical bar by setting engineering standards, leading design reviews, and mentoring engineers through the work.
- Partner closely with the Organic Growth product team (roadmap, KPIs, business accountability) while defining the platform “how” needed to support the product “what and why” for SEO/AEO and organic social channels.
- Serve as technical lead for the team that collectively owns the SEO and organic social platform, without expectation to personally build all components.
- Drive success by setting technical strategy and going deep on hard cross-cutting problems.
Requirements
- Experience with federated GraphQL and API gateway architectures, and with CDN, WAF, and bot-management layers.
- Familiarity with search engine indexing APIs and dynamic-rendering or prerender approaches.
- Direct experience with AppsFlyer (or Branch/Adjust) SDK integration, OneLink/deferred deep linking, and attribution reconciliation.
- Experience defining SLOs and real-time alerting for a customer-facing platform.
- Prior experience standing up or re-platforming an SEO engineering function.
- Strong backend engineering skills: proficiency in Python and JavaScript/TypeScript (Node), comfortable owning production services.
- Rendering fluency with React/Next.js and the SEO implications of SSR/SSG/ISR/CSR, able to debug hydration and crawler-rendering issues.
- Data and analysis skills: SQL against a cloud data warehouse for log-file, crawl-budget, and deeplink-performance analysis.
- CI/CD and automation: built or owned regression gates and automated quality checks in a delivery pipeline.
- Cross-team technical leadership as an IC: ability to drive fixes and influence design across teams without positional authority, and to act as calm incident commander.
- AI-assisted engineering experience: fluency using AI coding assistants on production code and ability to identify incorrect output.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience, plus 8+ years of software engineering experience, including experience owning technical SEO or crawl/rendering infrastructure.
- Experience with deeplinking/attribution infrastructure is a strong plus even without an SEO background.
