Staff Transmission Engineer - Overhead Transmission
Job Description
Burns & McDonnell’s Houston Transmission and Distribution Group seeks a Staff Transmission Engineer to lead overhead transmission design efforts spanning 69 kV to 500 kV. This onsite role focuses on technical leadership, mentoring, and hands-on design delivery while aligning with project schedules, budgets, and ongoing process improvements that enhance team performance.
Location: Houston, TX (onsite). Other locations: Austin, TX. Schedule: Full-time. Travel: Yes, up to 10% of the time.
Responsibilities
- Provide technical leadership for overhead transmission design teams on projects ranging from 69kV to 500kV.
- Mentor, coach, and develop team members.
- Independently execute design work with engineering judgment.
- Perform quality reviews.
- Identify and communicate changes to the project scope to the engineering lead and the project manager.
- Provide input and adhere to project schedules.
- Understand and monitor project budgets.
- Identify and communicate technical risks associated with projects.
- Identify, develop, and communicate processes and tools to increase efficiency across the team and department.
- Create, improve, facilitate, and teach training courses to the project team and department.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external clients to improve project team performance.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related field from an ABET-accredited program with 3 years of transmission engineering experience; consulting experience preferred.
- Or Bachelor’s degree in Civil or related Engineering Technology from an ABET-accredited program, successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, and 3 years of transmission engineering experience; consulting experience preferred.
- Or Master’s degree in Civil Engineering with 2 years of transmission engineering experience; consulting experience preferred.
- Strong knowledge of standard civil/structural engineering techniques and procedures.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment, with demonstrated critical thinking skills.
- Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD, MicroStation, BIM (Revit), Civil 3D, PLS, PLS-CADD, RISA-3D, MathCADD, and/or hydraulic, hydrologic, pavement, and transmission analysis programs.
- Strong attention to detail, facilitation, teamwork, collaboration, organization, and problem-solving abilities.
- EIT certification preferred.
