Substation Engineer IV
Job Description
TRC Companies is seeking an accomplished electrical engineer to lead the design, evaluation, and construction oversight of substation projects from its San Ramon, California site. This Substation Engineer IV role blends technical leadership with a deep knowledge of industry standards, guiding initiatives from concept through completion to ensure safety, reliability, and regulatory compliance.
Responsibilities
- Apply substantial engineering expertise to assess, select, adapt, and implement established techniques, procedures, and criteria for electrical substation systems of varying size and complexity.
- Lead preliminary design activities, prepare budget estimates, and establish project schedules.
- Develop detailed designs, generate cost estimates, and refine construction timelines.
- Specify equipment, evaluate supplier proposals, and issue requisitions.
- Perform engineering calculations to verify the safety and performance of equipment and systems.
- Select and apply appropriate engineering practices, equipment options, and system configurations.
- Coordinate with interdisciplinary teams to ensure constructability and alignment with project requirements.
- Coordinate design engineering and equipment deliveries to support construction timelines.
- Obtain on-site measurements and other data to inform the design or evaluate equipment performance.
- Review completed work for design adequacy, quality, and documentation completeness.
- Monitor field construction to ensure conformity with plans and specifications.
- Ensure compliance with applicable engineering codes and industry practices throughout construction.
- Track construction schedules to support timely project completion.
- Implement design changes as directed by the Project Engineer.
- Lead testing programs for materials, equipment, or plant systems as directed by the Project Engineer.
- Assist in evaluating and approving contractor invoices.
- Assist with receiving, inspection, and approval of equipment and materials.
- Act as Project Engineer on assigned projects of moderate to large size and complexity.
- Conduct complex studies and economic analyses of engineering alternatives.
- Prepare reports and feasibility studies for submission to Management.
- Provide budget and schedule information to the Project Manager and senior leadership.
- Serve as Project Engineer on assigned projects when required.
- Apply expertise in the company’s design, construction, QA/QC, and safety standards and document control system.
- Demonstrate expertise in applying national and local standards (eg, ANSI/IEEE, NESC, ASTM, AIC).
- Promote thorough record keeping and assume responsibility for the quality of all work performed.
- Stay informed of current developments in the relevant technical areas.
- Lead professional development, training, and evaluation of department personnel.
- Travel to support project work may be required.
- Other duties as required.
Requirements
- Engineer IV (Lead Engineer) or equivalent with at least eight years of relevant experience in the designated engineering field.
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an accredited program (or equivalent experience in the field).
- Professional Engineer license strongly preferred.

Salary
USD 130,020.80 - 160,000.00 per year
