Test & Automation Engineer

At the University of Dayton in Dayton, Ohio, this role centers on building and running hands-on thermal management experiments tied to aircraft research. The position also connects test hardware work with software development, coordinating with research engineers and computer scientists to create control software for the experiment environment.

Working onsite, you will lead technicians, support equipment sizing decisions with engineering calculations, and share outcomes with engineers and management. This role requires a solid fabrication background and the ability to translate requirements into laboratory systems supported by clear documentation.

Responsibilities

• Design, construct, and operate novel thermal management experiments for aircraft
• Coordinate with research engineers and computer scientists to develop control software for the experiments
• Direct and oversee the work of technicians
• Perform calculations that support the sizing and selection of test rig components
• Communicate results to engineers and management

Requirements

• Education: BS in Engineering Technology
• Experience: Five years of experience in fabrication and installation of laboratory and experimental apparatus
• Instrumentation and controls fundamentals
• Proficiency in machining and shop processes
• Proficiency in CAD software for generating electrical and mechanical drawings
• Common sense fundamentals of machine design
• Due to U.S. federal government research contract requirements, candidates must be U.S. citizens

Preferred Qualifications

• BS in Engineering
• Ten years of experience in fabrication and installation of laboratory and experimental apparatus
• Extensive knowledge of instrumentation and controls
• Experience sizing, designing, constructing, and operating two-phase thermal management systems
• Journeyman HVAC or electrician certification
• Strong common sense fundamentals of machine design
