Job Description
This Senior Transmission Planning Engineer role focuses on steady-state, contingency, and transfer studies using grid-planning software, translating utility needs into repeatable product workflows. The work is hands-on and applied to transmission planning analysis rather than software development or management.
Responsibilities
- Build and refine integrated transmission planning workflows, with emphasis on steady-state system planning, contingency analysis, transfer capability, economic and congestion assessment, and base-case development.
- Execute transmission planning studies using the company’s software in collaboration with utility clients, helping address real planning challenges with new approaches to traditional study processes.
- Translate utility and ISO/RTO planning requirements, including regional and system planning, generator interconnection, congestion analysis, and related processes, into clear product and modeling requirements.
- Build, validate, condition, and review transmission planning cases and perform standard steady-state analyses.
- Prototype and help define automation solutions for large network simulation studies, including case building and conditioning, contingency definition development, screening tools, results analysis automation, and related workflows.
- Advise on network representation, data requirements, modeling approaches, and study assumptions to support consistency and modeling quality across cases.
- Identify opportunities to improve or automate existing transmission planning processes and provide subject matter expertise to translate those improvements into software capabilities.
- Contribute transmission planning expertise to product user stories, feature requirements, and roadmap discussions with Product and Software Development.
- Collaborate with software engineers to implement and test functionality, validate releases, and maintain modeling quality standards.
- Support customer engagements through technical discussions, training, project delivery, study execution, and presentation of results.
- Act as a transmission planning SME during pre-sales demonstrations and prospective client conversations to help utility stakeholders understand how the platform addresses planning needs.
- Collaborate with internal experts across transmission, distribution, and generation to support integrated planning discussions.
- Stay current on relevant industry standards, regulatory requirements, and planning practices, including NERC and major regional frameworks such as WECC, ERCOT, MISO, PJM, and ENTSO-E, as well as grid modernization and emerging integrated planning approaches.
- Work directly with utilities to understand planning challenges, perform platform-based studies, communicate results, and apply learnings to guide continued product evolution.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in a STEM discipline required, with Electrical Engineering and Power Systems strongly preferred.
- PE license is a strong plus and may strengthen an otherwise relevant non-EE background.
- Approximately 4–5+ years of hands-on transmission planning experience at a utility, ISO/RTO, consulting, or professional services organization preferred.
- Demonstrated experience personally conducting transmission planning studies, not primarily managing or overseeing others.
- Strong knowledge of steady-state system planning, including contingency analysis, transfer capability studies, economic and congestion assessments, and base-case model development.
- Integrated resource or system planning experience is a strong plus.
- Hands-on experience with at least one primary industry transmission planning platform; PSS®E, PowerWorld, or PSLF are preferred.
- Experience limited solely to TARA is not sufficient.
- PSCAD and Aspen OneLiner experience are useful additional qualifications but are not substitutes for hands-on experience with a broader transmission planning platform.
- Familiarity with transmission planning standards and processes, including NERC TPL compliance, regional transmission planning, interconnection queue studies, and long-term system planning (independent ownership of TPL documentation is not required if meaningful participation in the underlying analysis is demonstrated).
- Strong client-facing communication skills, including independent discussion of study requirements, technical conversations with utility stakeholders, presentation of results, and clear communication of complex concepts to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Ability to organize and execute studies end-to-end, including understanding the planning problem, selecting an approach, coordinating inputs, performing analysis, and communicating results.
- Interest in challenging and improving traditional transmission planning processes rather than only executing established workflows.
- Comfort working closely with product and software engineering teams and translating real-world planning needs into ideas for workflows, functionality, and product improvements.
- Scripting or workflow automation experience is a plus, with Python preferred; no software development background required.
- Strong analytical and creative problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Curiosity about adjacent planning domains such as distribution and generation, and comfort working in a small, cross-functional environment where responsibilities overlap.

Location, Travel, and Work Style
- Work location: Hybrid remote in Edgewater, CO 80214.
- Edgewater, Colorado (Denver metro) preferred; remote candidates within the U.S. will be considered.
- Local candidates who can collaborate regularly in the office are preferred, though onsite work is not required for an otherwise strong candidate.
- For remote candidates, Mountain Time or nearby U.S. time zones are preferred to support collaboration with the Denver and Germany-based teams.
- Travel: Approximately 10%.
- Remote employees should be able to travel periodically to the Denver office, including a longer onsite period during onboarding, plus occasional conferences or other business travel.
