Transportation Engineer III or IV

The Texas Department of Transportation invites a Transportation Engineer III or IV to tackle a broad, high-impact portfolio spanning planning, design, and operations within the Fort Worth District. This role emphasizes coordinating complex transportation projects, ensuring compliance with standards, and guiding engineering efforts from concept through construction on a statewide scale.

Responsibilities

• Lead advanced and complex engineering design work, developing layouts, sketches, plans, specifications, estimates, and contracts.
• Conduct sophisticated planning tasks such as plan reviews, calculations, and transportation planning studies.
• Collect and evaluate data, perform analyses, conduct inspections, develop forecasts, and contribute to plan development.
• Review and support Standard Operating Procedures for maintaining and archiving project schedules, managing resources and budgets, handling project changes, and monitoring quality performance metrics.
• Apply project management principles across initiating, planning, executing, monitoring, controlling, and closing for highly complex transportation projects.
• Assist with design tasks, computer operations, and plan preparation.
• Coordinate design schematics, capacity and level of service studies, and review in-house and consultant traffic control, traffic management, and ITS plans and projects.
• Coordinate phases of preliminary design and revisions in PS&E with districts, divisions, administration, FHWA, contractors, fabricators, Corps of Engineers, and local entities.
• Communicate with local officials on critical findings involving structures outside state jurisdiction to ensure appropriate posting, repair, or closure actions for public safety.
• Review and process Plans, Specifications & Estimates submissions, as well as special specifications or special provisions.
• Collaborate with Area Engineers and review area office contract submissions.
• Execute additional job responsibilities as assigned, supporting highly advanced design and planning activities as needed.

Requirements

• Valid driver’s license; the position requires operating a state vehicle.
• Licensed Professional Engineer (PE).
• Open Water Diver certification if performing underwater bridge inspections.
• Bridge Inspection: must complete a comprehensive training course based on the Bridge Inspector's Training Manual or possess NICET Level III or IV in Bridge Safety Inspection within one year of hire.
• If currently licensed in another U.S. state but not Texas, must meet the Texas Engineering Practices Act requirements, obtain Texas PE licensure within six months of hire, and sign an employment agreement accordingly.
• Education: Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science.
• Experience: Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience.

Compensation and Location

• Salary range: USD 76,530 to 142,374 per year.
• Location: Fort Worth, TX (onsite).

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

• Subject to outside environmental conditions with limited weather protection
• Exposure to extreme cold and heat beyond typical thresholds
• Light work involving lifting up to 20 lbs, with frequent tasks requiring lifting up to 10 lbs
• Ability to walk, stand, crouch, and move across various surfaces for extended periods
• Extensive reading and data analysis on computer screens; good visual acuity for observations
• Ability to communicate clearly by speaking and listening in discussions
