Overview

Butler America Telecom seeks a capable Outside Plant (OSP) Engineer with hands-on experience with Lumen, CenturyLink, or BrightSpeed. The role centers on designing, planning, and supervising the construction of OSP infrastructure, while partnering with cross-functional teams to ensure projects are delivered on time and within budget.

Key Responsibilities

Design and engineer OSP networks including fiber optic, copper, and coaxial cable systems
Perform field surveys, site walks, and feasibility studies to determine optimal routes for deployments
Prepare and review engineering plans, CAD drawings, and technical specifications
Oversee construction schedules and budgets, ensuring compliance with industry standards and safety regulations
Coordinate with project managers, vendors, and contractors to meet project milestones
Conduct quality assurance checks to ensure OSP installations meet company and client standards

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Telecommunications, or a related field preferred
Three or more years of experience in OSP engineering with Lumen, CenturyLink, or BrightSpeed
Proficiency in AutoCAD, GIS, and other OSP design software
Strong understanding of permitting, right-of-way, and utility coordination processes
Excellent problem-solving skills and keen attention to detail

Compensation and Benefits

Pay: $50,174.00 - $100,000.00 per year

Job Description

Overview

Stratus Networks / Stratus Construction is seeking an experienced outside plant (OSP) Design Engineer to join our team. This full-time role focuses on designing our all-fiber network and coordinating deployments to customers. The position is based in Rockford, Illinois, with a salary range of $55,000 to $85,000 per year, depending on experience. Hybrid remote work options are available for the Rockford, IL 61101 area.

Responsibilities

Design and develop outside plant (OSP) network infrastructure
Perform field surveys, site walks, and feasibility assessments to identify optimal routing for customer deployments
Create and review engineering plans, drawings, and statements of work (SOW)
Manage construction schedules, budgets, and ensure compliance with industry standards and safety regulations
Collaborate with project managers, vendors, and contractors to meet project milestones
Conduct quality checks to ensure OSP installations meet company and client standards
Schedule survey dates, construction builds, and fiber pulls
Engineer and collaborate with IDOT, counties, towns, and municipalities for legal mandates and improvement work
Track Stratus material inventory
Understand permitting, right-of-way, easements, and utility coordination processes
Experience with ARC/GIS, AutoCAD, and Google Earth
Read and interpret construction drawings, splice schematics, and fiber test results
Manage emergency outages for Stratus structures
Understand telecommunications infrastructure, including fiber backbone, fiber distribution, vaults, manholes, and all duct types
General construction knowledge
Process revision requests, cost change approvals, and as-built redlines for record compliance
Maintain strong professional written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
Problem solving, including ability to read, interpret, input, and analyze data
Work on multiple projects simultaneously and prioritize tasks
Provide daily progress updates to the reporting manager
Create, schedule, and complete tasks independently

Experience and Education

Associate’s degree in Engineering, Telecommunications, or related field preferred
5+ years of experience in OSP engineering
