OSP Engineer

OSP Design Engineer position based in Rockford, IL, onsite with Stratus Networks/Stratus Construction.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop the outside plant OSP network infrastructure, including fiber backbone, distribution, vaults, manholes, and duct systems.
• Conduct field surveys, site walks, and feasibility analyses to identify optimal routing for customer deployments.
• Prepare, review, and approve engineering drawings, plans, and statements of work.
• Manage construction schedules and budgets while ensuring compliance with industry standards and safety regulations.
• Collaborate with project managers, vendors, and contractors to meet project milestones.
• Perform quality checks to ensure OSP installations meet company and client standards.
• Schedule survey dates, construction builds, and fiber pulls.
• Engage with IDOT, counties, towns, and municipalities for regulatory mandates and improvement work.
• Track material inventory for Stratus operations.
• Navigate permitting, right-of-way, easements, and utility coordination processes.
• Utilize ARC/GIS, AutoCAD, and Google Earth for design and mapping tasks.
• Read and interpret construction drawings, splice schematics, and fiber test results.
• Coordinate and manage emergency outages affecting Stratus infrastructure.
• Apply knowledge of telecommunications infrastructure including fiber backbone, distribution networks, vaults, manholes, and duct networks.
• Demonstrate general construction knowledge.
• Process revision requests, approve cost changes, and update as-built records for compliance.
• Exhibit strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Analyze data to solve problems, interpret inputs, and support decisions.
• Manage multiple projects concurrently and prioritize tasks effectively.
• Communicate daily progress status to the reporting manager.
• Create, schedule, and complete tasks independently with minimal supervision.

Requirements

• Associate degree in Engineering, Telecommunications, or related field preferred.
• 5+ years of experience in OSP engineering.
• Driver's license required.
