AI Engineer
Job Description
The AI Engineer will join Charles Schwab’s AI Strategy & Transformation team (AI.x) in San Francisco to design, build, and deliver GenAI applications that improve client experience and support measurable business outcomes. This role emphasizes end-to-end engineering and production delivery practices.
Role Overview
As part of AI.x, you will develop GenAI solutions with a focus on transforming concepts into production-ready systems. The work includes collaborating across architecture, engineering, and business leadership to align implementation with Schwab’s enterprise AI strategy and delivery goals.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and deliver GenAI applications that enhance client experience and create business value.
- Partner with architects, engineers, and business leaders to ensure solutions align with Schwab’s enterprise strategy.
- Learn from senior engineers, contribute to technical discussions, and help build strong engineering practices through continuous learning.
- Address complex technical challenges, support best engineering standards, and drive iterative progress from concept through production.
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years of software development experience, with 3+ years as a hands-on engineer in startups and/or large organizations.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field.
- 3+ years building complex products from scratch and supporting them in production environments.
- 1+ years developing applications using AI models to deliver business impact.
- 2+ years working with applications or data pipelines that interface with large datasets.
- 2+ years experience with containers and cloud-native applications, including exposure to deploying in a public cloud using infrastructure as code.
Preferred Qualifications
- Strong computer science fundamentals and experience across multiple areas of the tech stack.
- Exposure to proprietary or open-source LLMs such as Gemini, Claude, OpenAI (or other models) and experience contributing to LLM-powered applications.
- Quality-focused development habits, including writing and maintaining tests.
- Experience evaluating and monitoring LLM outputs for quality and consistency.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to share perspectives verbally and in writing.
- Interest in mentoring peers and learning through feedback and code reviews.
- Commitment to continuous learning and improvement.
- Ability to resolve complex problems even with ambiguous or incomplete data within distributed systems.
- Broad business domain knowledge related to products contributed to.
- Curiosity about new technologies and processes, including sharing knowledge with the team.
- Experience with Python and front-end development is preferred but not required.
- Master’s or advanced degrees in Computer Science or a related field are a plus.

It sets the enterprise AI vision, invests in high-potential opportunities, accelerates delivery across the organization, builds core AI platform capabilities at scale, and explores next-generation GenAI efforts to support how Schwab serves clients.
Location and Salary
- Location: San Francisco, CA (onsite)
- Salary: USD 200,000 to 250,000 per year
