Android Engineer, Plugin Developer Platform

OpenAI’s Plugin Developer Platform team builds the APIs, SDKs, and developer tools that allow people to extend ChatGPT and Codex. This Android role focuses on creating Android experiences and reusable components that help plugins, connectors, and interactive apps work smoothly across mobile.

Based in San Francisco with a hybrid schedule, you will collaborate with platform engineers, product partners, and developers from early exploration through launch and ongoing iteration.

Responsibilities

• Build Android experiences for plugins, connectors, and interactive apps within ChatGPT.
• Develop reusable Android components and interfaces that support a growing ecosystem of developer-built experiences.
• Partner with platform engineers to connect native mobile experiences with APIs, SDKs, and backend systems.
• Work with developers and partners to identify integration challenges and improve the mobile building experience.
• Improve app performance, reliability, architecture, testing, and developer tooling.
• Own projects from initial requirements through release, measurement, and iteration.

• Deep experience building Android applications using Kotlin and modern Android development frameworks.
• Experience shipping consumer-facing mobile products at scale, with a focus on performance, quality, and user experience.
• A platform mindset, with interest in designing reusable interfaces and abstractions others can build on.

About the Team

The Plugin Developer Platform team develops the foundations that let people extend ChatGPT and Codex. Work includes plugins, connectors, the Model Context Protocol (MCP), and interactive apps, covering plugin creation and publishing, systems that run plugins across products, and open standards developers can build on. A plugin packages instructions and skills along with the connections to tools and data it needs.

About the Role

The team is seeking an experienced Android engineer to help build plugin foundations that support developers extending ChatGPT and enable users to discover and use those capabilities from their devices. You will partner across native Android interfaces, help drive features from early exploration through implementation, launch, and iteration, and engage directly with developers and partners to understand how their workflows translate to Android. This role is based in San Francisco and follows a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week, with relocation assistance offered to eligible new employees.

Compensation

USD 185,000 - 385,000 per year
