Job Description

The Associate Engineer role supports the City of Torrance within the Engineering Division of the Community Development Department. This position manages municipal engineering projects, prepares and presents reports and contracts, and leads engineering staff while coordinating with multiple city departments.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees municipal engineering projects.
  • Prepares and presents reports and agenda items for City Council meetings and commissions.
  • Prepares and administers professional engineering and professional services contracts.
  • Plans and directs the work of junior professional and technical engineering staff.
  • Performs related duties as required.
  • Collaborates with departments such as Public Works, Transportation, and Community Services, and with the Current Development, Planning, and Building divisions of Community Development.

Compensation

USD 52 - 63 per hour

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering.
  • Three years of professional engineering experience in field and office settings.
  • Valid California driver's license.

Example of Duties

  • Hold a Bachelor's degree in engineering and possess three years of professional engineering field and office experience.
  • Experience or training in engineering computer applications is desirable.
  • Must hold and maintain a valid California driver's license.
  • Desirable to have a valid registration as a civil or professional engineer issued by the California State Board of Registration.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of civil engineering within a municipal context.
  • Strong ability to create maps, reports, and presentations.
  • Working knowledge of Windows applications, including spreadsheets and databases, plus AutoCAD and ESRI GIS software.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans, technical reports, and specifications.
  • Ability to perform field inspections to verify utility and feature locations and to research GIS-related information.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment and make well-reasoned decisions.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to represent the City in meetings and presentations to diverse audiences with tact and professionalism.
  • Ability to manage and complete assignments independently in a fast-paced environment, showing initiative and problem-solving.
  • Team-oriented mindset suited to collaborative environments with shared risk and responsibility.
