Job Description
Liebherr Mining Equipment Newport News Co. is seeking an Autonomy Systems Engineer for an on-site role in Newport News, VA. This position centers on researching, developing, designing, and validating mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic hardware along with the associated control logic for large mining haul trucks and their autonomous counterparts.
Responsibilities
- Design and integrate mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and electro-mechanical systems for heavy mining haul trucks and autonomous variants.
- Perform system calculations and simulations to verify performance.
- Create schematic representations of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and electro-mechanical systems.
- Collaborate with Mechanical, Hydraulic, Electrical, and other disciplines to define specifications and requirements that capture control system logic for haul truck functions.
- Develop software modules or employ model-based design techniques to build control software.
- Prepare detailed test requests to initiate component and system level testing and validation.
- Work independently and as part of a team with engineers, designers, and production personnel on ad hoc projects.
- Participate in the Engineering Development Program.
- Research electric and hydraulic components for control system applications.
- Analyze and optimize system designs and parameters using analytical methods.
- Coordinate with other disciplines to specify appropriate control components (PLCs, computing platforms, HMI, and related hardware).
- Estimate time and cost requirements for the development and serial production of haul truck systems.
- Review customer design proposals, specifications, manuals, and related data.
- Collaborate with engineers and personnel to develop operating procedures, resolve malfunctions, and provide technical information.
- Train, mentor, and develop engineers and other personnel on operating procedures, resolving system malfunctions, and providing technical information (Autonomy).
- Review and approve designs of mechanical and electrical systems to ensure conformance with engineering design and performance specifications (Autonomy).
Requirements
- Systems Engineer 1: Master of Science (MS) or Bachelor of Science (BSME, BSEE, BS Mechatronics Engineer, or BSCompE) or Associate of Science (ASEE) with 10 years of relevant electrical experience in an engineering environment.
- Systems Engineer 2: MS with 1 year of relevant electrical experience or BS with 2 years of relevant electrical experience in an engineering environment.
- Systems Engineer 3: MS with 4 to 6 years of relevant electrical experience or BS with 6 to 8 years of relevant electrical experience in an engineering environment.
- Systems Engineer 4 (Senior): MS with 6 to 8 years of relevant electrical experience or BS with 8 to 10 years of relevant electrical experience in an engineering environment.
- Domestic and international travel up to 15% of the time.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver’s license and passport.
- Ability to maintain Mine Safety & Health Administration (MSHA) certification.
