Job Description

Liebherr Mining Equipment Newport News Co offers a secure, globally connected engineering environment that values reliability, innovation, and collaboration. This role supports Liebherr mining trucks and autonomous haulage systems from Newport News, VA, with remote and on-site engineering assistance. The position operates on 24/7 rosters with up to 12-hour shifts, one week on and one week off, and includes travel up to 20% domestically and internationally.

Responsibilities

  • Provide remote and on-site engineering support that ensures product reliability, functionality, and cost targets, including verification, troubleshooting, validation, and commissioning of mechanical, electrical, and software systems
  • Promptly respond to service requests and collaborate with affiliates, customers, Engineering, and suppliers to resolve issues
  • Research and analyze data from Product Incident Reports, Product Assembly Reports, and incident tickets to identify and address problems
  • Participate in Product Issue Resolution through data collection and root cause analysis to address field failures
  • Act as a communication link between affiliates or customers and Regional Customer Support Managers to ensure effective service delivery
  • Assist Regional Customer Support Managers, Engineering, and other Liebherr departments to resolve product problems and expedite solutions
  • Alert the organization to potential or known problems affecting product quality and service
  • Recommend hardware design modifications and functional changes to systems and subsystems to improve performance
  • Participate in design reviews and contribute to verification and validation plans for new or redesigned components
  • Review and validate new components, designs, and corrective actions to enhance truck performance and reliability
  • Ensure design-related campaigns such as notifications, modifications, and upgrades are executed by customers and affiliates, with documentation provided to the factory
  • Provide technical guidance for service manuals, technical instructions, service information, engineering change requests, and training materials
  • Engage with internal and external stakeholders to manage risks related to design, functionality, and customer relationships
  • Oversee assembly and commissioning of trucks to confirm conformance with factory specifications and customer requirements
  • Sign off and submit commissioning documents to LME Warranty administration prior to customer acceptance
  • Utilize computer aided design tools to perform specified engineering tasks

  • Robot Operating System (ROS) and wireless telemetry
  • PLC control on mobile equipment knowledge

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering (BSME, BSEE, BSCS, or related) and 3 years of relevant mining or engineering experience
  • Practical experience with Autonomous Haulage Systems in surface mining is preferred
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365 applications
  • Ability to interpret technical documents and drawings; clear, informative writing; and effective numerical reporting
  • Strong problem-solving skills, data analysis, and ability to develop alternative solutions
  • Comfort with mathematical concepts, geometry, and trigonometry; knowledge of low voltage electrical design and circuit analysis
  • Understanding of electric drive and hydraulic system design for mining equipment; knowledge of autonomous haulage systems for surface mining
  • Knowledge of communication protocols (CAN, J1939, DDS), ROS, real-time embedded systems
  • Experience with PLC control on mobile equipment and Creo View CAD
  • Project planning, risk management, change management, and stakeholder communication
  • Strong customer service skills and willingness to share knowledge with peers and customers
  • Ability to travel up to 20% domestically and internationally
  • Valid driver’s license and passport; MSHA certification; electrical certification in high, medium, and low voltage
  • Remote work eligibility (local) and willingness to work on 24/7 rosters up to 12 hours
