Job Description

The Bridge Design Engineer role is based onsite in Eugene, Oregon, with DOWL. The successful candidate will independently perform structural design and analysis tasks for bridges, requiring a civil engineering license and knowledge of AASHTO LRFD, IBC, and ASCE 7, while remaining capable of learning additional codes and collaborating across project teams.

Responsibilities

  • Anticipates and addresses the needs of other project disciplines.
  • Collaborates on the conceptual design of complex structures and structural elements.
  • Meets interim milestones to support downstream project execution.
  • Independently prepares structural calculations and cost estimates.
  • Produces CAD markups for design deliverables.
  • Drafts technical specifications and develops contract plans independently.
  • Assembles complete structural calculation packages.
  • Oversees project file management and documentation control.
  • Mentors team members on the responsibilities listed above.
  • Responds to questions and resolves issues related to individual design tasks.
  • Resolves project issues on small projects in coordination with the internal team.
  • Represents the team in client meetings.
  • Uses appropriate communication tools for project communications.
  • Assesses site conditions to determine design feasibility and compliance.
  • Monitors construction progress and ensures structural safety.
  • Coordinates with contractors, surveyors, and clients at off-site locations.
  • Responds to urgent issues such as structural failures or safety concerns.
  • Submits permit applications and attends plan reviews at municipal offices.
  • Participates in public in-person meetings and stakeholder consultations during project development.

Requirements

  • Licensed civil engineer in the state of primary practice, or able to obtain licensure in another state within six months of hire.
  • Working knowledge of AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications and/or the International Building Code and ASCE 7, with the ability to learn other design codes as needed.
  • Bachelor's degree is required; a master's degree is preferred.
  • Minimum of four years of relevant experience.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) licensure is required.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • Ability to travel to job sites as needed.
  • Strong technical writing skills.
