Chief Engineer

As part of The Brown Palace Hotel & Spa, the Chief Engineer leads the day-to-day operations of the engineering division on an onsite basis in Denver, CO. In the absence of the Director, this role also takes on administrative, financial, and operational responsibilities for engineering-related hotel needs.

Core responsibilities

• Support the development and execution of plans to keep the property, equipment, grounds, and other assets in safe, acceptable repair.
• Maintain hotel compliance with all local, state, and federal laws.
• Supervise and train Engineering staff across Customer Service, Empowerment, Standard Operating Procedures, and Loss Prevention.
• Develop and post all Engineering department schedules.
• Create and follow an annual departmental budget.
• Assist with financial forecasts and participate in monthly profit/loss review meetings.
• Design, implement, and maintain a preventative maintenance program for hotel equipment.
• Ensure emergency and life safety equipment and systems are inspected, tested, and certified according to Highgate Hotel standards.
• Participate in energy conservation initiatives.
• Review guest and meeting planner comment cards to ensure issues are identified and corrected in a timely manner.
• Ensure compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
• Assist with administration of all engineering-controlled vendor contracts.
• Handle room maintenance requests in a prompt and courteous manner.
• Follow up on alarms immediately to confirm exact location and cause, determine emergency status, report findings to the Front Desk, and take immediate action as needed.
• Assist with special projects and renovations as required.
• Support and participate in all Highgate Hotel programs.
• Participate in the Highgate Hotel Safety Committee.

Requirements

• Minimum 3 years of progressive facilities management experience in a hotel or related field, or a 2-year college degree plus 1 year related management experience.
• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Stationary Engineer’s license if required by local code.
• Skills in HVAC, electrical, plumbing, boiler operations, and general maintenance.
• Long hours may be required.
• Physical demands include exerting up to 100 pounds occasionally, up to 50 pounds frequently, and up to 20 pounds constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or move objects.
• Maintain a warm and friendly demeanor and provide service-oriented communication with employees and guests.
• Effectively listen to, understand, and clarify concerns raised by employees and guests.
• Multitask and prioritize departmental functions to meet deadlines.
• Attend hotel required meetings and trainings; maintain regular attendance per Highgate Hotel Standards and scheduling needs.
• Participate in M.O.D. coverage as required.
• Wear nametags and maintain high standards of personal appearance and grooming.
• Comply with Highgate Hotel Standards and regulations; maximize productivity and help implement solutions to identified problem areas.
• Handle problems by anticipating, preventing, identifying, and solving as necessary.
• Understand and evaluate complex information and data from multiple sources to meet objectives.
• Maintain confidentiality of information.
• Perform other duties as requested by management.
