Construction Mechanical Professional Engineer
Job Description
The Construction Mechanical Professional Engineer will support mechanical engineering delivery across capital improvement projects for the School District Office of Capital Programs in Philadelphia. The role includes design coordination, permitting and bidding support, construction-phase design assistance, and inspection and assessment reporting for existing educational facilities and related support buildings, with some site work.
Location and Employment Details
- Location: Philadelphia, PA (onsite)
- Work mode: In person
- Compensation: USD 120,000 - 135,000 per year
- Experience: Minimum 7 years
- Education: Bachelor’s or master’s degree in engineering
Role Responsibilities
- Develop scope for capital projects, including inspection, assessment, preliminary design, and preparation of a formal scope determination report.
- Select and manage outside design consultants by preparing RFPs, approving design proposals, performing technical reviews of design documentation, and approving payment.
- Support the permit, advertisement, and bidding process by preparing bid specifications, meeting prospective contractors, and working through L&I and other agencies.
- Provide design support during construction.
- Complete inspections and issue assessment reports and directives to other School District departments, including Facilities, Maintenance and Environmental Services.
- Apply design and assessment experience for low to midrise commercial structures using concrete, steel, and masonry materials, including shallow and deep foundations.
- Use working knowledge of building envelope systems, including roof systems, cavity walls, mass masonry walls, terra cotta, and both current and historical (1900-present) assemblies.
- Apply working knowledge of building codes (City of Philadelphia, IBC) and material codes (AISC, ACI).
- Support the building permit process in the City of Philadelphia.
- Produce technical documents for industry-experienced audiences and communicate technical concepts to professionals and decision makers outside the construction industry.
- Self-perform design and documentation of small structural projects, such as small facade repairs and mechanical dunnage.
- Use Microsoft Office, Microsoft Project, Adobe Suite, and AutoCAD to support deliverables.
Typical Project Types
Projects are focused on existing educational buildings and associated facilities, including some site work. Typical assignments may include:
- Building envelope restoration
- Structural repairs and/or modifications, either stand alone or as part of interior fit-out, including new M/E/P systems
- Building additions
Additional typical project work includes:
- Storm water management systems
- Site erosion and sedimentation
- Site surveys
- Drainage systems
- Retaining wall repairs and reconstruction
- Site lighting and site utilities
Additional typical assignments may include:
- Boiler/chiller plant replacement
- Fire alarm systems
- Electrical service
- Re-lighting
- Emergency generator and elevator replacements
- New HVAC, plumbing and electrical systems for classroom modifications
Required Education, License, and Experience
- Degree: Bachelor’s or master’s degree in engineering
- License: Professional Engineer’s License in Pennsylvania (Required)
- Experience: Minimum 7 years of paid professional experience in school buildings and facilities design, construction and assessment
